Job description
We are looking for a Cloud Engineer to help build and operate the cloud platform behind our numerical weather modelling services. You will work closely with software engineers, the operations team and scientists to ensure our infrastructure is reliable, secure and scalable, enabling accurate weather data with real societal impact., As a Cloud Engineer at Whiffle, you take full ownership of our cloud infrastructure and platform services. You design, build and maintain the cloud infrastructure and platform services that power our products. The core foundations are in place, your challenge is to further develop, operate and improve them to support our growing products and teams. You ensure the platform remains secure, scalable and reliable, enabling efficient development and deployment of our weather models and services.
While you are the primary owner of our cloud infrastructure, you work closely with software engineers, scientists and other teams across the organization. You actively seek collaboration, translate technical choices to non-infrastructure colleagues, and help shape solutions together. This role suits someone who is technically strong, communicative and comfortable working in a small, highly collaborative environment.
Requirements
- BSc or MSc in Computer Science, IT or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- You live within a reasonable distance from our office in Delft
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform or OpenTofu)
- Experience with high-performance computing with GPUs in a cloud environment
- Strong knowledge of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Solid understanding of cloud fundamentals (IAM, logging, networking, resource management, cost monitoring), preferably Google Cloud; AWS/Azure is a plus
- Familiarity with data/workflow orchestration tools (e.g. Argo Workflows, Airflow, SLURM, Kafka)
- Cloud certifications (e.g. Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer) are a plus
- Comfortable collaborating in small teams and communicating with non-infrastructure colleagues
- Strong focus on quality with a pragmatic mindset, able to balance long-term robustness with practical solutions
