Job description
- Design and own end-to-end AWS solution architectures for payment-related systems and services
- Lead architectural decisions for high-availability, high-throughput transaction platforms
- Ensure solutions meet security, resilience, performance, and cost-optimisation standards
- Work closely with product managers, delivery teams, developers, and third-party suppliers
- Provide architectural governance, including design reviews and technical assurance
- Ensure compliance with PCI DSS, government security standards (eg NCSC, GDPR), and DVLA policies
- Support cloud migration and modernisation initiatives, including Legacy payment platforms
- Produce clear architecture artefacts (HLDs, LLDs, diagrams, decision records)
- Mentor and support engineers and junior architects across teams
- Engage with central government digital communities and best practices
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Solution Architect in complex, large-scale environments
- Strong hands-on experience designing solutions on AWS, including services such as:
- EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda
- API Gateway, ALB/NLB
- RDS, DynamoDB, S3
- IAM, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, KMS
- Demonstrable experience delivering payment systems, including:
- Online payment processing
- Integration with payment service providers (PSPs)
- Transaction management and reconciliation
- Solid understanding of PCI DSS and secure payment architecture patterns
- Experience designing highly available, resilient and fault-tolerant systems
- Strong knowledge of REST APIs, event-driven architectures, and microservices
- Ability to communicate complex technical designs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working within UK Government or public sector organisations
- Familiarity with GDS standards, Technology Code of Practice, and Service Assessments
- Experience with infrastructure as code (eg Terraform, CloudFormation)
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practices
- AWS certifications (eg AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional)
- Experience with fraud prevention, monitoring, and payment analytics
