Job description

The Future Power Systems function within the Networks & Innovation Directorate focuses on power system capacity & flexibility planning, techno-economic studies, and future operations planning. This role involves dynamic stability and security modelling of the All-Island power system. The team is responsible for the All-Island Lookahead Security Assessment Tool (LSAT) and the ongoing development of models that ensure the secure operation of the power system. The team also supports the Operational Policy Roadmap, aiming to manage up to 95% renewable energy by 2030., * Conduct power system analysis (steady-state load flow, voltage, short circuit, transient stability).

  • Investigate solutions for the challenges of operating a high-RES power system.
  • Focus on system strength, dynamic stability, and enhancing interconnection, energy storage, and offshore projects.
  • Use power system modelling software (PSS/E, PowerFactory, DSA tools, etc.).
  • Maintain and update dynamic models to reflect the transmission system's transient performance during contingency events.
  • Identify efficiencies in processes and modelling, including automating tasks using coding.
  • Develop technical reports and communicate findings clearly to stakeholders.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders, including network operators, regulators, and government bodies.
  • Mentor and guide junior team members.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Microsoft Office?, * Degree in engineering or equivalent, with 3+ years of experience in power systems or the electricity industry.

  • Strong technical knowledge of power systems, network planning, and transmission equipment.
  • Proficiency in power system modelling software such as PSSE, PowerFactory, DSA tools, Matlab.
  • Knowledge of relevant transmission system regulations, technical standards, and policies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Advanced Excel skills for data analysis.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with the Northern Irish power system.
  • Python coding development experience.
  • Understanding of national and European energy policies.
  • Experience with project management in a team setting.
