Job description

An opportunity has arisen in the councils ICT service to join our Networking Team, as an IT Network Engineer., This role is vital in ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of our network infrastructure across council sites. You ll be responsible for maintaining and upgrading network hardware, managing firewalls and VPNs, and supporting the rollout of new technologies to improve service delivery., * Provide 3rd line technical support of all existing network infrastructure

  • Plan and implement updates of network infrastructure, identifying and communicating any risks and possible outages resulting from such changes
  • Maintain, design, setup and configure complex network environments
  • Troubleshooting malfunctions of network hardware and software applications, security systems to resolve operational issues to a satisfactory conclusion
  • Identify and escalate improvements to the operational management of the network infrastructure including the selection of suitable tools

Requirements

We re looking for someone with strong experience in Cisco and/or FortiGate network environments, a solid understanding of TCP/IP, routing, switching, and network security principles. You ll work closely with internal teams and external partners to troubleshoot issues, implement solutions, and contribute to strategic infrastructure projects. Experience of cloud networking is beneficial with Azure preferred but skills transferable from AWS or GCP.

This role calls for a strong analytical mindset, solid technical capabilities, and a collaborative approach to solving problems within cross-functional teams. Your work will have a direct impact on improving service efficiency, security and availability and improving service delivery to Oldham Council and the people of the Oldham Borough., * 4+ years experience in a similar role with supporting qualifications.

  • Comfortable working within a team, supporting other teams to aid them in fulfilling their duties
  • Professional qualifications such as CCNA, CCNP, FCA or FCP (desirable)
  • Can demonstrate a good understanding of network protocols and services including but not limited to (TCP/IP, routing protocols, VRF s, VPN, MPLS, VLAN s, VxLAN, STP, Etherchannel/MCLAG, access-lists/security-policies, NAT, AAA, 802.1x, etc)
