Job description

The INSO Portal is a core platform that brings together INSO's digital services into a single, coherent experience. It serves NGO partners, INSO field teams, and HQ staff, ensuring that users can securely access the right information, tools, and services when they need them.

The Portal is a long-term product, not a one-off system. It requires careful design, ongoing evolution, and engineers who take ownership of both technical quality and user experience.

In This Role, You Will

Build - Design and develop features for the INSO Portal, focusing on reliability, security, and usability. You will work across backend and frontend components and be involved throughout the full life cycle of your work.

Own - Take responsibility for the systems you build, from design decisions through to production and maintenance. You will help shape technical direction and improve existing solutions where needed.

Collaborate - Work closely with other engineers and operational teams to deliver solutions that reflect real-world needs.

Evolve - Contribute to improving engineering practices, architecture, and standards as the platform grows and requirements change.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Usability?, You are a software engineer who values well-structured, maintainable systems and understands the importance of building software that others can rely on.

You bring 3+ years of professional software development experience and are comfortable working in an environment where requirements evolve and refactoring is part of the job. You take ownership of your work, are thoughtful in your technical decisions, and are open to discussion and improvement.

You also bring:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to reason about complex systems
  • A solid foundation in object-oriented programming and software design principles
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams and communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues
  • An interest in product thinking and user experience, not just implementation
  • A sense of responsibility for security, data integrity, and long-term system health

Technical Foundations

  • Strong experience with Java (Spring ecosystem)
  • Experience building modern web applications using Angular or similar frameworks
  • Experience working with relational databases such as MySQL
  • Familiarity with caching or distributed systems (e.g. Redis)
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs and distributed system architectures
  • Experience working in containerised environments (Docker / Kubernetes) is a plus

We value strong engineering fundamentals over experience with every specific tool.

Benefits & conditions

INSO is fully committed to safe recruitment, selection and vetting of all potential new staff, trustees and volunteers and we will ensure rigorous compliance with our Code of Conduct and Safeguarding policy throughout the recruitment process.

Terms & Conditions:

Fixed-term (renewable) full-time contract based in The Hague, Netherlands or remote.

  • If based in The Hague: The monthly salary is EUR 5,200, plus 8% vacation pay (vakantiegeld) and 2.5 days of annual leave per month. INSO provides Basic Premium ONVZ health insurance for staff members and their dependents.
  • If based outside the Netherlands: Contract type, terms and benefits will be determined in line with INSO policies.
