Job description

Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) relies on a wide range of technologies. As Lead DevOps Engineer (Cloud Platform), you will lead the development of our cloud platform for national systems underpinning CTP operations that keep the country safe.

This role is aligned to the Lead DevOps Engineer role set out within the Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework (DDAT).

You'll join a new team of cloud engineers, working flexibly from home and with a home office space in our air-conditioned operations center located east of Birmingham, with easy access from the M6 and M42. A London office location is also available. This is a great opportunity to assist in building a world class cloud services platform.

The Cloud Platform Team support the development and operation of the cloud platform through tools, environments and best practice.

The team are responsible for underpinning support and development processes including managing tools, environments, central infrastructure as code control, maintaining development standards and building software that automates processes and systems on AWS and Azure.

A Lead DevOps Engineer leads one or a small number of related project teams and contributes to the development of the strategic direction.

At this role level, you will:

  • act as a technical platform (product) owner, developing medium to long term strategies for product lines
  • provide technical leadership and guidance through coaching and mentoring
  • lead the sharing of knowledge and good practice

You will work on a variety of platforms and tools so being a lifelong learner with the ability to quickly learn technical skills are key to your success.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A solid background in modern software engineering or platform infrastructure support.
  • Have a proven track record in creating and maintaining infrastructure as code platforms, cloud environments or similar.

The Lead DevOps Engineer (Cloud Platform) will also help plan projects and be involved in project management decisions as part of agile service delivery teams.

The Cloud Platform team is a key component of CTPs IT strategy which operational activities will depend upon.

Key Tasks

As the Lead DevOps Engineer (Cloud Platform), you will:

  • Own the development and operation of the cloud infrastructure:

  • Provide team and project leadership to ensure standards are met.

  • Work with developers and engineers to ensure that software development follows established processes and works as intended.

  • Maintain and update processes as required.

  • Ensure personal and team workload is effectively managed, prioritised and issues are escalated to line management as necessary.

  • Ensure adherence to required polices, standards, controls and best practice.

  • Create, maintain and review technical documentation to ensure all services are maintained and knowledge is shared.

  • Proactively monitor cloud environments to help prevent issues arising.

  • Proactively drive continuous improvement across cloud services.

  • Assist in mentoring and developing the team.

  • Deputise for the Infrastructure Cloud Lead as required.

Vetting

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Developed Vetting (DV) level before taking up the post.

This post requires British nationality (some dual nationals may be ineligible) and an Enhanced Security Check (eSC)/Developed Vetting (DV) clearance.

  • User focus, The role requires strong experience of cloud infrastructure and DevOps. The role holder should demonstrate:

  • A broad range of skills and experience across both technical and relevant non-technical disciplines and a desire to continue to learn and develop.

  • Strong understanding and experience of Tier 1 cloud service providers such as AWS, Azure and creatively solving business problems in cloud environments.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to simply and clearly communicate technical designs verbally, in writing and present to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Proven experience of team leadership whilst growing and supporting a DevOps culture in delivering complex projects.

  • Building and operating modern digital service platform (or significant portions thereof) including architecture, estimation, planning, non-functional requirements and Continuous Improvement activities using modern agile techniques.

  • Implementing robust security controls and monitoring solutions across infrastructure and application components.

  • Making effective decisions within fast-moving support or delivery environments.

  • Understanding and experience of configuration management or infrastructure as code, such as Terraform, or similar.

  • Experience of automation and scripting in a relevant language.

  • Formal certification from cloud service provider or in a related discipline.
  • Experience of working in an agile environment.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively to contribute to the mission.
