Job description
Location: South Kensington Campus (hybrid options available)
About the role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen within Data Science Imperial (DSI) for a Systems Engineer to play a central role in the ongoing evolution of the Data Observatory (DO)- one of Europe's largest immersive visualisation environments.
You will help maintain and improve the platform that powers high-impact demos and data-driven research, while contributing to the development of the Open Visualisation Environment (OVE) and supporting a vibrant community of researchers, collaborators and visitors. The role offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge visualisation technologies and the chance to support a world-class facility in daily operation.
What you would be doing:
You will:
- Support the end-to-end development of interactive, high-quality visualisation demos using OVE and related tools, working directly with academics, students and collaborators.
- Maintain and enhance the OVE platform, ensuring it remains robust, secure and performant across demos, events and research projects.
- Manage the reliability of the Data Observatory and Visual Corridor, including systems monitoring, incident response and operational documentation.
- Prepare and support the DO for tours and workshops, often presenting technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Work with the infrastructure team to improve the performance and security of the underlying system.
What we are looking for:
We are seeking a proactive engineer with:
- Experience analysing and solving complex programming problems, and delivering software through the full development lifecycle (design, implementation, deployment).
- Strong programming skills in JavaScript, Python or similar languages, with knowledge of modern application development (Git, CI/CD, containers).
- Understanding of contemporary full-stack frameworks (e.g. React, Node.js) and their use in data-centric applications.
- Experience developing visualisations, interactive projects or data-driven applications.
- Experience with Linux and/or Windows systems (desktop and server) and an interest in automation and system reliability engineering.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and explain technical ideas clearly to non-specialist audiences.
What we can offer you:
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to use science for humanity.
- Develop in your role with access to learning and development opportunities.
- The opportunity to work at a world-leading institution and contribute to a flagship visualisation facility with international reach.
- A highly collaborative environment with opportunities to engage with researchers across disciplines and external partners.
- Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 41 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
