Job description

Reporting to the Operations Manager and working closely with ATU Donegal's WiSAR research team, the Automation/IoT Systems Engineer will lead the design, development and deployment of the new real-time monitoring product for wastewater treatment plants., * Design and develop IoT-enabled hardware and software for process monitoring and fault detection.

  • Build and test sensor integration, data logging and communication modules.
  • Develop cloud database and dashboard visualisation tools for remote diagnostics.
  • Conduct live system testing and data validation on pilot plants.
  • Collaborate with academic partners on algorithm design for anomaly detection.
  • Prepare technical documentation, user manuals and training materials.
  • Support knowledge transfer and staff training within Viltra post-project.
  • Ensure compliance with CE marking and data-protection requirements.

There is potential for the role to become permanent following successful project delivery.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Wastewater treatment?, Do you have a Bachelor's degree?, * Min 2.2 Honours Degree in Mechatronics, Electronic Engineering, or Computing (Instrumentation focus), or related discipline.

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in instrumentation, automation or IoT systems.
  • Proficiency in Python or Node.js for sensor data processing and system integration.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Northern Ireland/UK and travel throughout the island of Ireland if required; if you do require a visa/work permit allowing you to work in Northern Ireland/UK you must upload a copy of it with your application. Failure to provide a relevant Visa/Work permit will result in your application not being considered.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience with water or wastewater treatment control systems.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure/AWS) and data visualisation dashboards.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g. Modbus, MQTT).
  • Understanding of environmental monitoring and compliance reporting.
  • Demonstrated project management or cross-functional team skills.
  • Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
