As a Systems Engineer in our Serco UK Central Government, Defence team, you'll keep critical technology running smoothly so colleagues and students can focus on developing the skills that shape the future of defence capability. You'll make a positive impact every day by ensuring the systems that support Joint Force Command Battle Lab (JFCBL) training environments are secure, reliable, and ready when they're needed most. Working as the dedicated Systems Engineer for JFCBL, you'll take ownership of the full hardware and software lifecycle-from provisioning and configuration to operation and maintenance. Your work will help enable high-quality training delivery and ensure that those serving our communities have the tools and technology they need to succeed. What you'll do as a Systems Engineer You'll be entrusted to:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all IT service matters for JFCBL
  • Deliver 1st, 2nd, and 3rd line technical support to colleagues and students
  • Prepare, issue, maintain, and collect laptops and desktops for users
  • Carry out user account administration, including unlocking accounts and resetting passwords
  • Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot servers, storage, email, printing, and network infrastructure
  • Ensure the security of all systems and perform scheduled maintenance tasks
  • Maintain shared folder structures, access permissions, and relevant documentation
  • Oversee backup routines and support restoration activities when required
  • Install, maintain, and support specialist third-party software

Requirements

Experience as a Systems Engineer with strong Microsoft-based network systems expertise

  • A degree or equivalent experience
  • Microsoft and networking qualifications, or relevant professional experience
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet tight deadlines
  • A proactive, solution-focused approach, with flexibility to adapt to changing needs Vetting and checks: This role requires Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance, which involves verifying your identity, employment history, nationality, and criminal record to meet government security standards. In addition, depending on the nature of the role, you may need to obtain formal Security Clearance (such as CTC or SC), which includes more detailed background checks on employment, criminal record, and financial history to ensure suitability for working in secure environments. Please note that UK residency requirements may apply for certain levels of clearance.
