Job description

Reporting directly to the Engineering Director, the Design Engineer will be responsible for progressing projects from initial concept through to production release. You will work closely with the in-house test laboratory, project management team, suppliers, and subcontractors to deliver robust, compliant, and commercially viable product designs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Product design and development using SolidWorks and Creo
  • Generating and working to approved design and test specifications
  • Producing conceptual designs, prototypes, and associated costing data
  • Releasing engineering change notes and updating technical drawings
  • Managing electrical and mechanical testing regimes and supporting design validation
  • Liaising with external suppliers for out-of-house engineering and tooling activities
  • Producing tooling files, procurement specifications, and obtaining supplier quotations
  • Developing and validating assembly and construction methods
  • Modifying existing products to meet customer and regulatory requirements
  • Analysing competitor products to support innovation and continuous improvement
  • Supporting the preparation of CE / UKCA technical files and compliance documentation

Requirements

You will demonstrate strong technical capability alongside a proactive, collaborative approach. Essential requirements:

  • Competent user of SolidWorks for 3D modelling and surfacing (Creo experience advantageous)

  • Previous experience in product design, ideally within lighting or related sectors

  • HNC / HND / Degree in Engineering or Product Design

  • Proven ability to manage your own projects from concept to completion

  • Good knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and design for manufacture

  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail

  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team

  • Flexible, conscientious, and results-driven mindset Desirable skills:

  • Experience with lens or optical design software

  • Knowledge of Relux or DIALux lighting software
