Job description
The Lead Network Engineer will develop and tailor network designs for a variety of rail projects, using approved architecture templates and adapting them to meet specific cybersecurity, performance, and system requirements. You will liaise closely with telecom specialists, project delivery teams, and engineering stakeholders to ensure successful end-to-end delivery. Key Responsibilities
- Produce high-level and detailed network designs
- Create network architecture diagrams, IP addressing and subnet design
- Develop cable schematics, diversity plans, and configuration documents
- Perform network configuration, FAT testing, on-site build, integration, and system testing
- Ensure design work meets required technical, quality, and safety standards
- Monitor progress against timescales and take corrective action where required
- Review and check network designs produced by colleagues
- Support tender evaluation and provide technical recommendations
- Uphold responsibilities under Health & Safety legislation and company procedures
Requirements

Degree in engineering or another numerate discipline, or equivalent experience

Strong background in Network Communication Systems & Architectures, particularly LAN/WAN and secure network design

Experience in safety-related or regulated environments

Understanding of the systems engineering life cycle

Ability to work to industry quality and safety standards

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

Ability to work to tight deadlines

Cisco certification (CCNA or above) or equivalent working experience Desirable Experience

Chartered Engineer status

IRSE Licence

Experience with: o Software Defined Networking (SDN) o Virtualisation o Data centre technologies o Network automation

Experience in UK rail operational telecoms, standards, or delivery

Knowledge of wider railway systems
