Job description

This position exists to ensure that the University of Northern Colorado's network infrastructure, and associated systems, such as communications, are operating efficiently and are well maintained. The position provides network and communication systems support for the institution's enterprise systems & applications, data center, student & staff networking needs, and instructional technologies. The Security, Networking and Communications (SNAC) department promotes a culture that empowers employees as individual contributors to make decisions while fostering a strong, collaborative, and supportive team.

Independently identify, investigate, and resolve networking or communication issues with support from colleagues or vendors. Example responsibilities: changes to ACLs, switches, and other network infrastructure without supervision. This position will act in support of multiple significant networking and communication systems such as: VPN, Authentication systems, Core Switches, Edge Switches, Internet Routers, Voice Infrastructure, Wireless, Layer 1-3 management in the data center, etc. including updates, operating system, implementing new networks, and/or maintaining existing networking appliances or services.

This position requires advanced knowledge across multiple disciplines of networking and voice infrastructure. A successful candidate will have a passion for education and technology, the ability to find creative solutions to complex problems, eagerness to take initiative, and outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

Job Duties:

50% Service & Support:

Configure desk phones and make the correct adjustments to the VoIP (or virtual telephony system) management systems. Identifying misconfigured or malfunctioning switches and wireless access points. Resolve user issues when connecting to the virtual private network. Cabling and cable management. Resolve connectivity issues on wired and wireless networks. Troubleshoot wireless issues both remotely and in person for faculty, staff, and students using available documentation, input from the network engineers, and using tools which provide data for issue resolution. Understand and trouble shoot our authentication mechanisms for access to the network using available documentation, input from the network engineers, and using tools which provide data for issue resolution. Applying a solution based on documentation, education resources, input from the network engineers, and using tools which provide data for issue resolution. Resolve issues where faculty/staff/students are suddenly having issues with network services. Determine why an error is occurring and determine if it is something that can or needs to be fixed. Resolve complex network issues by using best practice troubleshooting methodology.

25% Troubleshoot, Maintain, and Improve Networking and Communications:

Determine why a disruption occurred, investigate the root cause, and prevent it from recurring. Monitor networking and communication tools for errors or other signs of misconfiguration. Understand our firewall, network segmentation, and ACE strategies and apply them. Understand the VLAN scheme and how that should impact requests for changes. Fully utilizing and maintaining technologies that are this position's responsibility. Improve networking and communication services, and technologies. Enhance the team's understanding of networking and communications. Update and maintain network equipment. Work with external vendors to troubleshoot issues outside the university network. Look for improvements or services to repair based on feedback from the community or peers.

20% Supporting Project Work:

Improve network performance for an individual user. Resolve a specific, moderately complex piece of a larger project. Implement a specific or limited function in a monitoring and management tool. Make significant changes to a network infrastructure or devices in collaboration with other members of the team. Understand how a component of a project operates or understand how it needs to be configured in support of a larger project by using documentation provided by the vendor, available vendor resources, or consulting with peers.

5% Maintain and Enhance Professional Skillset:

Pursue professional development to maintain expertise in best practices network design and function. Research and recommend the next generation of infrastructure. Research solutions to technical challenges., This position is contingent on funding from the Colorado State Legislature, approval by the Board of Trustees, and subject to the policies and regulations of the University of Northern Colorado.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Wireless networking?, Candidates must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application; UNC cannot provide H-1B sponsorship at this time., A college degree from an accredited college or university.

At least 2 years of experience providing support for network infrastructure and associated technologies. Experience with: Cisco Call Manager, Teams Voice, wireless infrastructure troubleshooting, VoIP, cabling, access control lists or access control entry, firewall management, installation and configuration of switches and access points.

Excellent team building and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and educate coworkers. Superb interpersonal skills: able to work with customers at all levels and develop effective solutions to diverse and complex business problems. Strong written and oral communication skills, sufficient to convey complex issues effectively to technical and non-technical audiences. Expertise supporting network infrastructure and voice technologies. Competence with asset management principles. Strong time-management and organizational skills, with a record of being flexible, accurate, detail-oriented, reliable, and self-motivated. Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented work environment. Flexible schedule to perform major campus maintenance and upgrades to critical technologies. Knowledge of physical plant infrastructure and IP technologies, top-level understanding of enterprise voice, network and server technologies, familiarity with web tools and technology and desktop related hardware.
