Job description
We are seeking highly experienced Foxboro SDA System architecture leader, as chief system architect you will act as a highest-level technical authority driving the architecture, evolution, and long-term strategy of complex industrial automation systems-including the full Foxboro SDA technology stack across hardware, firmware, software, and cloud. You define end-to-end system architectures that ensure interoperability, cybersecurity, determinism, and long-term scalability across distributed control system (DCS) environments.
You bring deep expertise in advanced industrial automation technologies, including software-defined architectures, OPC UA over TSN, deterministic Ethernet, embedded Linux firmware, containerization (Docker), orchestration frameworks, microservices, cloud-native patterns, and high-availability system design. You also possess strong industrial networking expertise and a comprehensive understanding of DCS principles, real-time communication, and system-of-systems integration.
Your technical leadership shapes Schneider Electric's industrial automation strategy, engineering standards, and industry influence on a global scale.
What will you do:

Define and lead system architecture strategy across HW/FW/SW/Cloud for advanced industrial automation platforms, including Foxboro SDA.

Architect modern industrial automation solutions using technologies such as:
o OPC UA over TSN and deterministic industrial Ethernet
o Embedded Linux firmware and secure OS architecture
o Docker containers, orchestration frameworks (Kubernetes/K3s)
o Microservices, distributed system patterns, API-based architectures
o High availability, redundancy, and real-time failover mechanisms
o Advanced industrial networking (L2/L3 switching, VLANs, QoS, PRP/HSR/MRP, segmentation)
o DCS integration, controller communication models, and edge-to-cloud coordination

Drive platform modernization and long-term technology roadmap for Schneider Electric's industrial automation systems.

Influence multi-business-unit engineering standards and technology strategy for next-generation automation architecture.

Mentor architects, technical leaders, and R&D teams; elevate technical excellence and engineering rigor globally.

Represent Schneider Electric in standards bodies, external technical forums, and industry consortiums.
Requirements

10+ years of experience in industrial automation, systems engineering, or control system architecture.

Proven mastery across hardware, embedded firmware, software platforms, and cloud-native systems.

Deep technical expertise in:
o Industrial protocols: OPC UA, TSN, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP
o Linux firmware, real-time OS and secure embedded architectures
o Networking: deterministic Ethernet, redundancy protocols, routing/switching, segmentation, security fundamentals
o Containerization & orchestration technologies
o Distributed architectures, microservices, APIs
o High-availability & mission-critical system design

Demonstrated leadership through influence with strong peer-to-peer (P2P) communication and debate skills.

Strong technical judgment and ability to balance performance, cost, risk, and business impact.

Excellent communication skills across executive, engineering, customer, and industry audiences.

Solid understanding of business viability, industrial automation market trends, and long-term technology economics.
Who will you report to?
You will report to the Director of System Architecure, Cyber Security and DevSecOps. This role is a hybrid position. You are required to report to the Foxboro, MA or Andover, MA office at least 3 days a week and up to 25% travel a year.
Benefits & conditions
For this U.S. based position, the expected compensation range is $168,000 - $211,000 per year, which includes base pay and short-term incentive.
The compensation range for this full-time position applies to candidates located within the United States. Our salary ranges are determined by reviewing roles of similar responsibility and level. Within the salary range, individual pay is determined by several factors including performance, knowledge, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
