Job description

Under the general direction of the Administrator, the Systems and Network Administrator participates as a member of the IT Services team, focusing on setting up, configuring, and deploying networks and operating systems for District-wide use. The system network administrator determines the District's data storage and transmission needs and makes key decisions regarding network setup, security and capacity to provide users with reliable access to key data and software. The Systems and Network Administrator may also directly install operating systems and programs on user hardware. It is also responsible for designing, configuring, and supporting standardized solutions that are reliable, available, scalable, manageable, secure and accessible., 1. Conduct diagnostic testing on servers and network configurations and administrate infrastructure, including firewalls, databases, malware protection software and other processes, as needed;

  1. Configure and apply system patches to servers and software;
  2. Implements various system software/hardware standards, procedures and maintenance activities to achieve the highest possible reliability, security, and accessibility of network systems and servers;
  3. Configure, operate and maintain a variety of organizational servers, including email, backup, business software, security, DNS, DHCP, SAN'S, Virtual machine and Virtual Desktop systems, applications, departmental and other assigned servers;
  4. Supports and maintains Office 365 user/group email account, troubleshoot email problem, migrate local Exchange email account to Office 365;
  5. Maintain Ohlone cloud infrastructure in AWS, troubleshoot and resolve server, DNS and Ohlone website problem;
  6. Evaluate network servers and architecture and suggest possible solutions to mitigate or reduce potential risk to systems and services;
  7. Research, identify and recommend potential technologies, products and/or changes to improve systems and network configurations and determine hardware or software and make recommendations regarding acquisition and requirements related to such changes;
  8. Design coordinate, implement and maintain network security measures in order to protect data, software, and hardware;
  9. Perform or work with team members to support regular backup operations and implement appropriate processes for data protection, disaster recovery, and failover procedures;
  10. Maintains and responsible for the maintenance, configuration, and reliable operation of computer systems, network servers, and virtualization;
  11. Analyze, evaluate and optimize network system or equipment performance;
  12. Perform and maintain data backups and disaster recovery operations including adding users to a network addressing all security related functions;
  13. Maintain logs related to network functions applications, as well as maintenance and repair records
  14. Communicate in-person or at meetings with personnel inside and outside of the college organization including contractors and construction personnel to coordinate activities, projects exchange information and resolve issues or concerns
  15. Act as a technical resource for questions and advises non-technical staff in the campus community based on user's expertise;
  16. Install and upgrade computer components and software, manage virtual servers, and integrate automation processes;
  17. Assign routing protocols and routing table configuration;
  18. Assist network administrator(s) to design, analyze and deploy network models including participating in decisions about future hardware or software purchases to upgrade organization's network;
  19. Troubleshoot and resolve network problems involving LAN, WLAN, WAN, VLAN, firewalls, network security, VPN, data center environmental systems and controls, network interconnectivity, and applications;
  20. Support LANs, WANs, network segments, Internet, and intranet systems;
  21. Prepare, update and submit usage reports and provide documentation and technical specifications to IT staff for planning and implementing new or upgrades of IT infrastructure;
  22. Develops and maintains complete and accurate records pertaining to hardware, software, system, and network configurations, changes, outages and improvement plans;
  23. Confer with network users about how to solve existing system problems and coordinate with users and team members to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner;
  24. Operates and maintains the college voice network;
  25. Configure communications servers and troubleshoot problems with telephony services including responding to inquiries and updating E-911 databased as needed
  26. Assign configuration of authentication and authorization of directory services including the organization's servers and desktop and mobile equipment ensure that email and data storage networks are functioning properly;
  27. Monitor server systems for efficient use of storage systems, make recommendations to increase efficiency and productivity of network and server systems in accordance with college policies and procedures;
  28. Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of the College's students, faculty, staff, and community.
  29. Effectively engage and support historically disproportionately impacted groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
  30. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Of

  1. VMWare, VDI Office Suites, Visio, Genetech, Alertus, Exchange, AWS, Office 365, Windows Server 2008-2019, SQL databases, VOIP, voicemail, PBX, TCP/IP, DNS, Routing, DHCP, Print Servers;

Requirements

Do you have a Associate's degree?, The ideal candidate is an initiative-taking, highly skilled, detail-orientated System and Network administrator who excels in supporting complex IT environments. The candidate brings deep technical expertise in system administration combined with evidence-based security best practices and proven network architecture proficiency which support stability, security, and growth of the environment. The candidate has extensive practical experience in administering Windows server environments, including virtualization, management of storage systems, identity management, cloud-based services (M365, Azure AD/Entra) and on-premise and cloud-hosted applications. The candidate works effectively within a team-based environment supporting knowledge sharing, thorough system documentation, and cross-functional planning and project initiatives. The candidate uses their analytical skills to quickly and effectively resolve complex issues to minimize impact on instruction and campus operations. The candidate will exhibit customer service focused communication skills delivering consistent and exceptional services and technical solutions to faculty, staff, and students in an environment that is committed to diversity, equity, and accessibility., Any combination equivalent to an Associate's degree with coursework in computer systems and network technologies, plus substantial continued education and training in the Information Technology field, OR equivalent experience in the field. Bachelor's degree and network / systems certification preferred. AND Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices., Minimum of two years professional experience directly supporting networks and servers. Four years of experience with progressively higher responsibilities preferred.

Physical Characteristics This position requires physical abilities needed to work in a standard office setting, including but not limited to: standing and/or sitting for prolonged periods; frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, and twisting; frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling moderate and heavy amounts of weight; operating office equipment which may require repeated fine motor skills (e.g.: keyboard use); and the ability to communicate in written and verbal forms. The position requires vision and hearing in normal ranges (with or without correction) sufficient to operate any assigned equipment and the ability to clearly communicate with others in written and verbal forms.

In addition to the above, the assignment will require the ability to work at heights in various settings and in enclosed spaces, and/or operate machinery required to complete assigned tasks. The work may also include physical labor, including but not limited to: climbing and balancing. The employee may be in environments which contain dust or odors related to the work being undertaken.

Classified employees advance one step on the salary schedule each year and have the potential to reach the current maximum step of $123,204 annually.
