Job description

The Manager, IT Distributed Systems is responsible for the design, availability, security, and performance of distributed computing environments that support clinical, operational, and administrative systems across the hospital. This role leads a team responsible for servers (physical and virtual), operating systems, storage, backups, identity services, and core infrastructure platforms that enable 24/7 patient care. The Manager ensures systems are reliable, scalable, secure, and compliant with healthcare regulatory requirements while supporting strategic technology initiatives., * Oversee the installation, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of distributed systems, including physical and virtual servers, storage platforms, email, and operating systems (Windows, Linux, UNIX).

  • Lead and develop a team of distributed systems engineers and analysts. Assign work, set priorities, and manage on-call coverage to ensure 24/7 system availability. Foster collaboration with network, security, clinical applications, and service desk teams.
  • Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, backup, and disaster recovery capabilities for mission-critical hospital systems.
  • Manage virtualization platforms, cloud integrations, and infrastructure automation where applicable.
  • Support clinical systems, including EHR platforms (e.g., Epic), imaging systems, and ancillary applications.
  • Monitor system performance, capacity, and utilization; plan for future growth and scalability.
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution of complex system issues and outages.
  • Develop and maintain operational procedures, standards, and documentation.
  • Ensure systems meet service level agreements (SLAs) and uptime requirements.
  • Partner with Information Security to ensure systems comply with HIPAA, HITECH, DNV, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Implement security controls, patching, vulnerability remediation, and access management.
  • Support audits, risk assessments, and compliance reviews related to infrastructure and system operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and test disaster recovery and business continuity plans for distributed systems.
  • Coordinate system recovery efforts during incidents, emergencies, or planned downtime.
  • Participate in emergency management and downtime planning for clinical operations.
  • Lead or support infrastructure projects, including system upgrades, migrations, and technology refresh initiatives.
  • Collaborate with IT leadership to develop infrastructure roadmaps aligned with organizational strategy.
  • In partnership with leadership and Human Resources, makes decisions or recommendations related to performance management, hiring, transfers, corrective actions, terminations, etc. Resolves staff issues and grievances in a fair, timely and consistent manner, also in partnership with HR.
  • Promote a culture of mentorship, teamwork, customer service and ongoing staff development.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies to improve reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and support agreements.
  • Assist in developing and managing departmental budgets for hardware, software, and services.
  • Ensure cost-effective use of resources while maintaining performance and reliability.
  • Forecast infrastructure needs and manage lifecycle planning for distributed systems assets.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years of experience with advanced skills in IT infrastructure, systems analysis, IT operations, and IT project management.
  • 1 year in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Proven aptitude for hands on-leadership and mentoring of staff.
  • Strong mathematical skills
  • Strong presentation, written, verbal and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Business or related field
  • Intermediate to expert level experience with datacenter technologies such as VMWare, Citrix, Veeam, NAS/SAN, Zerto or similar
  • Hands-on experience with clinical applications such as Epic, OnBase, Imprivata, Successful candidates might be required to undergo a background verification with an external vendor.
