Job description
As a Design Engineer, you'll play a key role in transforming concepts into high-quality, buildable steel components that perform reliably in real-world applications. You'll bridge engineering intent and fabrication reality, working closely with engineers, shop personnel, and customers to deliver designs that meet structural requirements while remaining practical and cost-effective to manufacture.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on engineering, seeing designs come to life in the shop, and collaborating across disciplines. You'll contribute throughout the full design lifecycle-from early concepts and analysis through prototype testing and final release to fabrication-using modern 3D CAD tools such as Autodesk products, Fusion, or SolidWorks.
What You'll Do
- Design and develop steel components and assemblies that balance structural integrity, manufacturability, and cost.
- Translate project requirements into clear, accurate 3D models, sketches, and detailed fabrication drawings that define form, fit, and function.
- Apply industry-standard welding symbols, tolerances, and fabrication details to support high-quality production.
- Support system and component development, ensuring designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Perform or review structural analyses to validate strength, stability, and serviceability.
- Participate in prototype builds and testing, using results to continuously improve designs.
- Prepare and maintain engineering documentation and technical reports that clearly communicate design intent and changes.
- Review drawings and documents prepared by others, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with quality standards.
- Create complete release packages for fabrication, including drawings, bills of materials, and supporting documentation.
- Collaborate closely with fabrication teams, incorporating shop feedback to improve manufacturability and efficiency.
- Work directly with customers to refine evolving requirements and deliver practical engineering solutions.
- Ensure all work complies with internal quality procedures and applicable engineering codes and standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Professional experience using 3D CAD software in a design-to-manufacturing environment.
- Strong ability to produce detailed fabrication drawings, including correct welding symbols and tolerances.
- Experience performing or reviewing structural analyses.
- Proven ability to create and maintain technical documentation and engineering reports.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with attention to detail and quality.
Preferred Experience
- Background in steel component or structural fabrication design.
- Hands-on experience with Autodesk tools, Fusion, and/or SolidWorks.
- Familiarity with engineering QA procedures and fabrication workflows.
- Experience working directly with manufacturing or shop floor teams.
Benefits & conditions
- Work in a collaborative environment where engineering and fabrication are closely connected.
- Tackle practical, real-world engineering challenges with visible impact.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in design quality and manufacturability.
