Job description

The IBM iSeries Computer Operator is responsible for the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the IBM iSeries (AS/400) environment and all associated systems. This role ensures the reliable execution of business-critical processes, including order processing, batch operations, system monitoring, and incident resolution, while maintaining high system availability and performance., System Monitoring & Operations

  • Monitor IBM iSeries (AS/400), servers, and peripheral equipment to ensure continuous uptime
  • Respond to system messages, console alerts, and error conditions promptly
  • Oversee all input/output processing, including job queues and output queues
  • Monitor server performance and overall system health

Batch Processing & Order Management

  • Execute and manage scheduled batch jobs (daily, weekly, monthly)
  • Ensure all processing meets operational SLAs and business requirements
  • Receive and process customer order files via FTP, ensuring accurate distribution to branches and warehouses
  • Support and monitor EDI transactions (810, 850, 855)

Monthly Responsibilities

  • Submit and monitor month-end processing activities
  • Generate and send customer statements to the mail house
  • Download and apply Taxware updates
  • Send Accounts Receivable files to Cortera and USTrade

Backup, Recovery & System Continuity

  • Perform routine system backups and verify backup integrity
  • Manage backup media (tape or cloud)
  • Assist with data restoration and disaster recovery procedures

Incident Management & Troubleshooting

  • Provide first-level troubleshooting for hardware, software, and connectivity issues
  • Support users in resolving system and application issues
  • Gather diagnostic information and escalate complex issues as needed
  • Log, track, and resolve incidents in accordance with IT procedures

User Support & Help Desk

  • Create, assign, and follow up on IT help desk tickets
  • Respond to user requests via phone, email, or in person
  • Manage user accounts, password resets, and basic system access

System Maintenance & Vendor Coordination

  • Coordinate service requests for AS/400 hardware and infrastructure
  • Work closely with programming and IT teams on system updates and enhancements
  • Assist in implementing system changes and corporate IT initiatives

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate operational logs and system documentation
  • Document procedures and provide training to staff as needed
  • Identify trends and recommend improvements for system performance and operations

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of IBM i (OS/400) operations and Control Language (CL)
  • Experience with job scheduling, batch processing, and system monitoring
  • Familiarity with:
  • IBM i Client Access
  • Windows and Windows Server environments
  • Microsoft Office applications

Experience

  • 1-3 years of experience in a midrange, mainframe, or data center operations environment
  • Experience in distribution, logistics, or ERP-based environments is a plus
