Job description

A client of Insight Global is seeking a Junior Network Engineer to support Virginia State University’s campus-wide networking environment in Petersburg, VA. This engineer will work in a mixed Juniper (85%) / Cisco infrastructure and will be heavily involved in hands-on troubleshooting, cabling, switching, routing, and wireless support. The target pay rate for this position is between $30-$39/hr depending on experience.

This role requires someone who is motivated to learn, comfortable working across campus buildings, and ready to support end-to-end network operations including cabling, device testing, WiFi support, and platform troubleshooting. This is a highly collaborative, physical-presence environment where engineers gain deep institutional knowledge and support a wide range of tasks.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot issues across Layer 1-7

  • Perform cabling, testing, and device support across campus

  • Support Juniper and Cisco hardware during ongoing migration

  • Upgrade and troubleshoot Meraki access points

  • Handle daily operations, ticket resolution, and walk-up requests

  • Navigate campus buildings to provide onsite support and build institutional knowledge

  • Work closely within a small, collaborative networking team

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of network engineering experience

  • Hands-on cabling experience

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across Layers 1-7

  • Understanding of switching, routing, and WiFi protocols

  • Comfortable with both physical work and ticket-based remote tasks

  • Willingness to walk campus buildings and learn the environment

  • Motivated, adaptable, and eager to learn multiple platforms * Experience with Juniper and Cisco networking

  • Experience upgrading/troubleshooting Meraki APs

  • Prior exposure to mixed vendor environments

  • Strong customer-service mindset (handling shoulder taps + low ticket volume)
