Job description

This role is designed for a hands-on engineer who wants to help build a growing technology services organization from the ground floor. The successful candidate will work directly with the owner and have a meaningful impact on the operational and technical direction of the business, with growing input into strategic decisions as the role expands.

About the Role

You’ll help build, document, and support our CHESS One platform and client environments - combining systems engineering, network deployment, and managed services support. This isn’t a “keep the lights on” role. You’ll be turning tribal knowledge into runbooks, standardizing how we deploy and support infrastructure, and helping build a platform that can scale.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and maintain technical runbooks, SOPs, and onboarding/offboarding documentation - your top priority in the first 90 days, as we capture critical institutional knowledge and standardize how we operate
  • Deploy and support client network infrastructure (switching, routing, wireless, firewalls, remote access)
  • Provide escalation-level troubleshooting for managed services clients
  • Support server, virtualization, and cloud environments (M365, Entra ID)
  • Participate in multi-site deployments - staging, rack-and-stack, on-site and remote implementation
  • Help identify opportunities to standardize and automate recurring work

Requirements

  • Solid foundation in Windows Server, Active Directory, M365, and Entra ID
  • Networking fundamentals: VLANs, L2/L3 switching, routing, VPN, wireless, firewall admin
  • Experience with at least one virtualization/backup platform (VMware, Hyper-V, or Veeam)
  • Comfort writing clear, professional documentation - diagrams, runbooks, SOPs
  • A builder mentality: you’d rather create structure than just maintain what exists

Nice to Have (not required - strong generalists encouraged to apply)

  • Cisco, Meraki, Fortinet, or Palo Alto experience
  • PowerShell or other scripting/automation
  • Microsoft Intune, Citrix, or BeyondTrust exposure

Benefits & conditions

This starts as a part-time, flexible-schedule engagement (15-25 hrs/week, $35-55/hr depending on experience). Transition to full-time ($80K-$115K) is tied to closing our first three AEC client engagements at target revenue levels, with a formal review of timing no later than the 9-12 month mark regardless of pace. You’ll have real ownership from day one - and a real say in how this platform and team take shape., The part-time engagement is approximately 90-100% remote. Upon transition to full-time, expect at least a 50/50 onsite/remote split, with the possibility of up to 75% onsite depending on client and project workload.
