Job description

We are seeking an Advanced Technology Soundscape Acoustician to support the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) at the Beaufort Laboratory in Beaufort, NC.

In this role, you will lead the management, processing, quality control, and analysis of passive acoustic data collected across marine ecosystems in the Southeastern United States-from North Carolina to Texas. You will evaluate soundscapes (biological, geological, and anthropogenic components), assess the distribution and habitat use of marine mammals and fishes, and contribute to national passive acoustic archives and scientific working groups.

Note: This position is not currently funded and is contingent upon contract award. Employment is subject to successful completion of any required background checks and security processing required by the customer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Resource Surveys & Data Management:
  • Provide administrative support to manage, organize, and analyze passive acoustic data across the Southeastern U.S.
  • Coordinate with project partners to ensure continuous, year-round data collection.
  • Package passive acoustic datasets, metadata, and analytical results for delivery to NCEI’s National Passive Acoustic Archive.
  • Maintain updated data availability records in tracking interfaces (e.g., Google Sheets, Smartsheets).
  • Acoustic Processing & QA/QC: Perform standardized quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) checks on bottom-mounted and mobile acoustic datasets within established protocols.
  • Analytical Support:
  • Analyze passive acoustic data using automated and manual detectors to describe biological soundscapes, marine mammal/fish occurrence, and ship source levels/distribution.
  • Assess species distribution and habitat use along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.
  • Fieldwork & General Duties:
  • Assist with field collection of passive acoustic data as needed.
  • Participate in national passive acoustic monitoring working groups and multidisciplinary collaborations.
  • Write competitive scientific proposals for extramural funding and review scientific reports and manuscripts.
  • Outreach & Scientific Forums: Participate in public stakeholder outreach and present at position-related workshops, scientific meetings, and symposiums.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Marine Biology, Data Science, or a related biological science OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 1 year of relevant research experience.
  • Acoustic Data Experience: Demonstrated experience analyzing passive acoustic data.
  • Technical Skills: Basic understanding of programming languages and experience with large data management.
  • Field Capability: Willing and able to participate in field research and data collection.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written/oral communication skills and proven ability to work collaboratively in large, multifaceted project teams.
  • Clearance: Ability to pass a federal background check for Public Trust clearance., * Ph.D. in Marine Biology or a related biological science.
  • Extensive experience leading the analysis of passive acoustic data.
  • Hands-on experience with specialized tools: Raven Pro, MATLAB, and R.
  • Proficiency in Python programming and working with Cloud platforms.
  • Solid understanding of signal processing techniques.
