- Install, test, maintain, and repair copper and fiber optic cabling systems.
- Support voice, data, video, CATV, network equipment, and campus events.
- Assist with infrastructure design, system layouts, and telecommunications planning.
- Apply University requirements and industry standards, including TIA/EIA, NEC, NFPA, and BICSI.
- Participate in construction, renovation, and technology infrastructure projects.
- Coordinate work with contractors, customers, supervisors, and campus partners.
- Maintain accurate cable plant, circuit, inventory, project, and work-order documentation.
- Provide technical guidance, troubleshooting support, and training to junior technicians.

Requirements
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys solving practical technical challenges, working in a variety of campus environments, and seeing the tangible results of their work., * Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the position or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience (typically 1 year or more) supporting communication infrastructure (i.e. copper cable, fiber, or wireless technologies).
- Experience working with network cabling topologies, understanding basic color coding, and managing day-to-day delivery of stable and reliable transport systems.
- Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios to job analysis.
- Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills must be systematic, technically curious, and self-motivated.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of constituencies in both technical and non-technical environments.
- Proficient in using personal computers and Microsoft Office productivity suite software and common applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to write and deliver clear and concise instructions, reports, and work summaries.
- Good interpersonal skills, as well as strong customer service and customer relations skills.
- Ability to accomplish day-to-day tasks including ascending/descending a ladder, working in confined spaces, moving and transporting materials up to 50 pounds.
- Valid US driver’s license and the ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety requirements (see website for info) https://uiowa.edu/riskmanagement/vehicle-use, * Knowledge of fiber optic splicing and testing including using an OTDR, power meter and light sources, and fusion splicer
- Proficiency with construction techniques, AutoCAD or other software, and structured cabling.
