Job description

The Senior Systems Administrator reports to the Supervisor, IT Technical Services and is responsible for the administration, implementation, support and management of the IT Linux and infrastructure systems; serves as a technical expert in the area of system administration for complex operating systems. This position will manage and support the Linux, OpenShift, Storage, Backup, and Recovery systems. RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Manage the day-to-day operations of servers and systems by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance, and repair. Configure, maintain, and support the Linux systems Configure, maintain, and support the OpenShift systems Configure, maintain, and support the Enterprise backup and recovery systems. Monitor and resolve backup related issues, including providing reporting on health of backup platforms. Create and maintain documentation on backup and recovery processes, policies and procedures. Perform file recovery tests and annual disaster recovery site tests. Ensure high availability and acceptable levels of performance of critical system resources. Participate in planning and implementation of projects for system operations and systems administration. Plan, organize, and document complex system design activities and configure systems to be consistent with policies/procedures. Interface with customers, peers, and managers to evaluate and understand business needs. Continually access the systems against potential threats and vulnerabilities using industry security compliance standards. Ensure that vulnerabilities are mitigated in a timely fashion. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Working knowledge of: Oracle Linux and Red Hat Linux system administration Linux vulnerability remediation Containerization and Kubernetes Enterprise Storage Enterprise Backups Security System performance monitoring tools Effective project management techniques, Oracle Linux and Red Hat Linux administration (Versions 7.x, 8.x) Patch evaluation and deployment: Oracle OLM/OSMH, ULN, yum/dnf, up2date Ansible Enterprise Storage (Nimble) Enterprise Backup Software (Veeam) Enterprise Backup Hardware (Exagrid) Bash shell scripting Unix/Linux technologies: printing, nfs, ftp, sftp, scp, kickstart, samba, apache Oracle databases and Oracle RAC a plus Cisco UCS VMware ESXi Server Windows 2016 R2 and above a plus DIRECT REPORTS N/A FREEDOM TO ACT This position does not require supervision over other personnel; must be able to work with minimal supervision. WORK CONDITIONS Job is performed in a typical office environment, but is subject to time pressures and constraints, and is also dependent on input from others. Often exposed to stressful situations. Subject drug and alcohol testing, per applicable federal regulations. Occasional travel is required to support remote office locations. Ability to work outside normal workdays and standard office hours. Required to maintain TWIC Card. Participate in IT Infrastructure on-call rotation.

Requirements

Exceptional communication skills; must have the ability to effectively communicate at all levels of an organization and with individuals from diverse disciplines and levels of technical expertise. Detail oriented and effective time management and organizational skills. Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Organized and able to manage multiple activities and programs timely and with a high degree of accuracy. Excellent customer service skills to support all personnel. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively others and lead projects to a successful end. Willingness and desire to learn new skills, technology, situations, and/or conditions. Ability to function professionally and effectively in a high-pressure environment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or a related discipline. Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Experience: Minimum of five (5) years relevant Systems Administrator experience including complex systems design, programming, and systems software and support. Must have experience in the design, planning, and implementation of reliable enterprise level systems.
