Core Network Engineer

Experteer Overview In this senior role, you will design, deploy, and support FirstLight’s backbone network, leading large-scale transport and IP/MPLS projects. You’ll partner with multiple teams to ensure reliability, growth, and operational handoff from concept to deployment. You’ll address capacity, security, and performance as part of a cross-functional effort to evolve our carrier-class network. This is an opportunity to shape core infrastructure and enable scalable, resilient services for enterprise and carrier customers. Compensation / Benefits * Lead network deployments from planning through implementation, testing, migration and handoff * Develop designs, implementation plans, migration procedures, test plans and rollback strategies * Own expansion and modernization projects from start to finish * Ensure solutions meet operational, scalability, resiliency and performance requirements * Coordinate with internal teams and external vendors for project execution * Design, deploy and troubleshoot carrier-class optical transport networks * Engineer and scale DWDM infrastructure for backbone growth * Engineer, design and implement upgrades to the IP Core backbone * Plan and implement capacity upgrades for flex-grid transport technologies * Support optical path engineering, wavelength provisioning, resilience and transport optimization * Design, deploy and troubleshoot large-scale Carrier Ethernet backbones * Maintain expert knowledge of Layer 2 transport and Ethernet service architecture * Support Ethernet transport technologies * Develop and maintain engineering standards and best practices * Design, deploy and support carrier-grade IP/MPLS backbone infrastructure * Maintain strong expertise in MPLS and IP protocols * Support backbone routing, resiliency and interconnection initiatives * Deploy, administer, and optimize Fortinet FortiGate and Cisco Firepower security solutions * Configure and maintain firewall policies, IPS/IDS, VPNs, NAT, application controls and threat prevention * Perform security assessments, vulnerability remediation and hardening initiatives Tasks * Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or equivalent experience * 7+ years in service provider or large-scale network engineering * Strong experience designing and troubleshooting: DWDM, Optical Transmission, SONET, Carrier Ethernet, IP/MPLS * Experience leading deployment, migration and infrastructure expansion projects * Strong troubleshooting across Layer 1-3 and multi-vendor environments * Ability to develop implementation plans, migration procedures, testing methodologies, and operational documentation * Strong verbal and written communication; team player Key requirements *
