Job description

The opportunity

As a Technical Architect you will play a pivotal role in shaping our technology landscape, ensuring that solutions - from cloud platforms to business applications - are scalable, maintainable and secure by design, with security considerations embedded proportionately where relevant. Your architectural vision will directly shape the digital experience for thousands of advisers and clients, helping us deliver secure, scalable, and cutting-edge solutions. A T-shaped architect who combines broad, hands-on experience across technology solutions with expertise in cloud, microservices, and integration, with a focus on Microsoft Azure and modern development patterns. This is a hybrid role based in Swindon, with 3 days required in the office.

The benefits

  • Salary - up to £73,500
  • Bonus scheme - on target bonus - 15%
  • Pension scheme - contribute up to 5% of your salary and Openwork will match you and put in an extra 5%
  • Critical illness cover
  • Income protection - 1x salary
  • Death in service - 4x salary
  • 27 days holiday + bank holidays, with the opportunity to buy up to an additional 10 days
  • A range of other flexible benefits to include private medical insurance, dental insurance and much more.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Lead the design and evolution of Openwork’s technology landscape, ensuring architecture is robust, future-ready and aligned with business strategy.
  • Champion best practice across cloud, microservices and integration, with a focus on Microsoft Azure, modern development patterns and proportionate security considerations.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable, secure and maintainable technology solutions.
  • Work with cyber security colleagues to identify practical controls for key architecture decisions.
  • Play a key role in the Technical Design Authority, shaping standards and guiding major technology decisions.
  • Drive the migration from legacy systems to modern, cloud-native platforms, unlocking agility and new capabilities.
  • Work with solution, data and infrastructure architects to deliver integrated architectures that enable business outcomes.
  • Mentor engineering teams and support continuous improvement by staying current with evolving software practices, tools and technologies.

What will you need to succeed

  • Proven experience as a technical, solution or application architect, ideally within financial services or another regulated environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft technologies, including Azure, Office 365, Entra ID, Dynamics, .NET, API management and third-party integrations.
  • Experience designing scalable, secure and maintainable solutions across cloud-native, microservices and modern development environments.
  • Ability to support migration from legacy systems to modern platforms while ensuring effective integration across technologies.
  • Awareness of secure-by-design principles, cloud security patterns, identity and access management, and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working with suppliers, vendors and partners, including market analysis, RFI/RFP activity, evaluation and recommendations.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business language for stakeholders.
  • A curious, improvement-focused mindset, with an interest in emerging technologies such as data, AI, automation and embedded agents.
