Job description

We’re supporting the growth of a highly innovative semiconductor metrology business that is solving one of the industry’s biggest challenges: measuring the next generation of advanced semiconductor devices.

Backed by leading global investors including Applied Ventures, the strategic venture arm of Applied Materials, the business has grown beyond 100 specialists and continues to scale rapidly as demand for its breakthrough technology accelerates.

As part of this growth, we are looking for a technically curious engineer who enjoys solving complex system-level problems involving precision motion control, automation, software, electronics and advanced instrumentation.

This isn’t a traditional support role. You’ll become one of the key technical experts responsible for diagnosing and resolving complex issues across highly sophisticated semiconductor inspection systems used by some of the world’s most advanced technology companies.

Why this role stands out

You’ll work on:

  • Precision motion control and feedback systems
  • Advanced semiconductor automation equipment
  • High-value scientific instrumentation
  • Complex software and hardware integration challenges
  • Root-cause investigations that influence future product development

If you enjoy understanding how entire systems interact-not just individual components-this role will be particularly rewarding.

What you’ll be doing

Becoming the technical escalation expert

  • Leading investigations into complex system issues affecting fielded and manufacturing systems
  • Supporting Customer Support, Applications and Field Service teams on technical escalations
  • Diagnosing issues spanning software, control systems, motion control hardware and automation equipment
  • Driving rapid resolution of critical customer-impacting issues

Working with world-class precision systems

  • Analyzing sensor feedback and motion performance
  • Supporting optimisation of high-accuracy electromechanical platforms
  • Working with wafer-handling systems and automation interfaces
  • Supporting integration with EFEMs and robotic handling platforms
  • Investigating communication and timing issues across complex equipment architectures

Driving continuous improvement

  • Performing structured root-cause analysis
  • Identifying design improvements that improve reliability and robustness
  • Feeding lessons learned back into Engineering and Product Development teams
  • Contributing to future product enhancements

Building technical capability across the business

  • Creating diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting guides
  • Supporting knowledge sharing and training activities

We’re particularly interested in people coming from:

  • Semiconductor equipment
  • Scientific instrumentation
  • Precision motion control
  • Photonics / optics
  • Microscopy systems
  • Complex electromechanical products
  • Robotics
  • Advanced manufacturing equipment

Requirements

  • Experience troubleshooting complex electromechanical systems
  • Understanding of motion control and precision positioning technologies
  • Experience analysing logs, telemetry and diagnostic data
  • Ability to work across software, hardware and systems engineering disciplines
  • Experience communicating technical issues to varied audiences, * Scientific instrumentation experience
  • Automation and robotics integration experienceKnowledge of metrology or microscopy systems
  • Exposure to high-precision positioning systems
  • Familiarity with Python, LabVIEW or C#, * Physics
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Mechatronics
  • Significant industry experience
  • Cutting-edge semiconductor technology
  • Direct influence on future products
  • Genuine scale-up environment
  • Share options with meaningful upside potential
  • Work alongside recognised experts in semiconductor metrology and precision engineering
