Job description

  1. We are building a senior research team in Amsterdam to help shape the next generation of DevEco, the integrated development environment for the HarmonyOS ecosystem.
  2. This is a senior engineering role with strong technical ownership. You will work with senior experts in Amsterdam and collaborate closely with the DevEco IDE product and engineering teams at headquarters in China.
  3. The team focuses on future technology directions, prototyping, technology scouting, and external collaboration in AI-native developer tooling. Production engineering is handled by the larger DevEco organization at headquarters. The Amsterdam team explores emerging technologies, validates promising ideas, and provides technical insights to support the future development of DevEco.
  4. The role focuses on a frontier area in software development: how human developers and AI agents collaborate within modern development environments. Your prototypes, technical insights, and recommendations will contribute directly to the future direction of DevEco and the HarmonyOS developer ecosystem.

  5. Research and explore next-generation AI-native IDE technologies and developer experiences for DevEco.
  6. Track, evaluate, and experiment with developments in IDEs, developer tools, and agentic coding systems, including Claude, Cursor, Trae, Google Antigravity, and other emerging products.
  7. Design and develop proof-of-concept prototypes and technical demos, and present findings to the DevEco IDE team and relevant stakeholders.
  8. Conduct technology scouting and technical evaluations to support decisions on future technology investment and product direction.
  9. Explore new approaches to human-AI collaboration in software development, including agentic workflows, context engineering, tool use, evaluation, and verification.
  10. Collaborate with universities, research institutes, startups, open-source communities, and industry experts in the developer-tools ecosystem.
  11. Work closely with colleagues in Amsterdam and teams at headquarters to translate promising technical ideas into practical prototypes and future product directions.

Requirements

  1. Strong hands-on experience in IDE development, developer-tools development, agentic coding systems, or related software engineering areas.
  2. Strong software engineering and prototyping skills, with the ability to independently investigate technical problems and build working proof-of-concept systems.
  3. Strong understanding of developer experience and what makes developer tools effective, practical, and user-friendly.
  4. Ability to translate emerging technologies and research ideas into practical prototypes, technical evaluations, and recommendations.
  5. Experience collaborating effectively across distributed and international teams.
  6. Strong written and spoken English.
  7. Based in or willing to relocate to Amsterdam.

  8. Interest in building world-class developer tools for an emerging mobile operating system ecosystem.
  9. Familiarity with modern IDE platform architectures and technologies, such as IntelliJ Platform, PSI, or LSP.
  10. Experience with compiler toolchains, build systems, developer harnesses, or related infrastructure.
  11. Practical experience integrating LLMs or coding agents into developer workflows, including context engineering, agent orchestration, evaluation, or verification.
  12. Experience with AI-native development environments, coding agents, or autonomous software engineering systems.
  13. Strong technical writing skills and the ability to critically assess emerging technologies.
  14. Experience working in distributed and international engineering or research teams.
  15. An existing network in the developer-tools research, startup, open-source, or industry community would be a plus.
