Graduate Solutions Design Engineer (Automation Systems)

As a Graduate Solutions Design Engineer, you will help turn customer requirements into practical, technically achievable automation concepts.

Working with experienced design and solutions engineers, you will produce layouts, technical proposals and cost estimates during the pre-sales and bidding process. As your knowledge develops, you will take increasing responsibility for designing defined projects from initial requirements through to concept, layout and costing.

What you will be doing

• Creating 2D and 3D CAD layouts for automated engineering and material-handling solutions.
• Analysing customer requirements and translating them into technical concepts, flow diagrams, proposals and cost estimates.
• Helping to assess whether proposed solutions are technically feasible and meet the customer’s operational requirements.
• Producing system specifications, quotations and supporting technical documentation for customer proposals.
• Supporting senior engineers with the design and costing of larger or more complex projects.
• Attending customer meetings and site visits to understand operational challenges and gather technical requirements.
• Maintaining accurate layouts and design documentation in line with established quality standards and design methods.
• Keeping up to date with relevant automation technologies, engineering products and supplier solutions.

Stock Control, Microsoft Excel, This role could suit a recent graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, Automation Engineering, Product Design Engineering or another closely related discipline. You do not need to have worked in automation before. We are looking for someone with the technical foundations, curiosity and communication skills to develop into the role. You are likely to bring:

• A degree, master’s qualification or equivalent technical training in a relevant engineering subject.
• Some experience of 2D or 3D CAD gained through university projects, placements, internships or employment.
• An interest in engineering design, automation, manufacturing, logistics technology or material-handling systems.
• The ability to analyse a technical problem and develop a practical, well-reasoned solution.
• Confidence working with calculations, technical information and detailed documentation.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical ideas to different audiences.
• A collaborative approach and willingness to learn from experienced colleagues.
• Good organisation skills and the ability to balance accuracy with project deadlines.
• An interest in developing commercial awareness and understanding how engineering designs are costed and presented to customers.

Experience with software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, Inventor or similar design packages would be useful, but proficiency in a particular system is not essential. Academic projects, competitions, internships and personal engineering projects will all be considered relevant experience. Skills
