Job description

You’ll join a small, collaborative engineering team responsible for developing and maintaining a range of internal systems and customer-facing applications, including a bespoke CRM and customer web portals.

Working alongside experienced engineers, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills across both frontend and backend technologies, with occasional exposure to DevOps and hardware.

Whether you’re a recent graduate, self-taught developer with a portfolio, or someone with commercial development experience, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Developing new features for internal systems and customer-facing applications.
  • Working on both frontend and backend development.
  • Maintaining and improving existing software.
  • Investigating, debugging and fixing software issues.
  • Optimising application performance.
  • Researching and implementing new technologies.
  • Collaborating with designers, department managers and other engineers to scope and deliver features.
  • Participating in code reviews and learning from experienced team members.

Requirements

Backend: PHP 8, Symfony 7 and Doctrine.

Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript, React and Svelte.

Database: MySQL.

Infrastructure: Linux, Docker, AWS, Cloudflare and Fastly.

Version Control: Git and GitLab.

You do not need to have experience with every technology listed above.

We’re looking for someone with hands-on experience in at least one frontend or backend development technology, whether gained through employment, personal projects, open-source contributions or academic study.

A willingness to learn and explore new technologies is just as important.

About You

We’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys software development and wants to continue developing their technical skills.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Some practical experience with frontend or backend software development.
  • A passion for designing and building high-quality software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
  • The confidence to work independently when required.
  • Pride in the quality of your work and a willingness to learn.

Previous commercial experience is not essential, and formal qualifications are not required.

If you’ve built your own projects, contributed to open-source software or developed applications during your studies, we’d be interested in hearing about them.

Benefits & conditions

  • Competitive salary of £28,000 - £35,000, depending on experience.
  • Flexible hybrid working following initial training and settling into the team.
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • A MacBook Pro provided for all successful candidates.
  • A personal learning and development budget for online courses, training and other resources.
  • Thorough training on internal business systems and processes.
  • The opportunity to learn from experienced software engineers.
  • Exposure to a varied technology stack and real-world software projects.

The Interview Process

The recruitment process consists of an initial Microsoft Teams interview, followed by a technical task for successful applicants.

Candidates who progress will then be invited to a face-to-face meeting to discuss their completed task and answer further interview questions.
