Job description

Are you an IT professional looking to take your technical experience further? We’re recruiting for a 2nd Line Engineer (Project Engineer) to join a Southampton-based technology team, offering the opportunity to combine advanced IT support with hands-on involvement in technical implementations, equipment deployments and infrastructure improvements.

This role is ideal for an engineer who has developed a solid foundation in IT support and is ready to take on more responsibility. You’ll be involved in investigating technical issues, resolving escalated problems and helping maintain reliable IT environments, while also gaining experience with the practical work involved in delivering technical projects.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will cover a range of IT systems and technologies, including Windows environments, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, networking and end-user infrastructure. Alongside troubleshooting and system administration, you’ll have the opportunity to assist with hardware rollouts, system configurations, upgrades and other technical assignments that keep client environments running efficiently.

Rather than being limited to a traditional support function, this position offers the chance to broaden your experience through practical project involvement. You’ll work alongside other technical professionals, develop your approach to resolving more complex issues and build a stronger understanding of how infrastructure changes are planned, implemented and supported.

The ideal candidate will be someone who enjoys getting hands-on with technology, can work through problems independently and wants to continue developing their technical capabilities. Whether you’re looking to strengthen your 2nd Line expertise or move towards a more project-driven engineering career, this role provides a platform to build on your existing experience.

  • Good knowledge of Windows operating systems and technical troubleshooting
  • Experience supporting and administering Microsoft 365

  • Experience troubleshooting hardware, software, user access and connectivity issues
  • Ability to investigate escalated incidents and identify effective solutions
  • Experience with equipment configuration, system upgrades or IT deployments would be advantageous
  • An interest in infrastructure changes, technical implementations and project work
  • Strong communication skills and a professional approach to supporting users
  • A proactive mindset, good organisational skills and a willingness to learn
  • Motivation to develop further within IT Infrastructure and Project Engineering, If you’re an experienced 2nd Line Engineer who wants to expand beyond day-to-day troubleshooting and become more involved in technical projects, this could be an excellent next move. Bring your existing IT knowledge, develop your practical engineering skills and take the next step towards a more varied technical career.

Benefits & conditions

  • £28,000 - £33,000 salary
  • Opportunity to combine 2nd Line support with practical project work
  • Exposure to system implementations, hardware deployments and infrastructure upgrades
  • Further development across Microsoft 365, Windows environments and networking
  • Experience working on technical assignments beyond routine support tickets

  • Collaboration with experienced technical professionals
  • Ongoing technical learning and development
