Life in Games: Four Decades of Code

with John Romero

Thursday 24 September 5:30 PM – 6:00 PM Mainstage

About This Session

John Romero has spent more than four decades writing code, designing games, building companies, and helping create some of the most influential software in the history of the medium. From programming games alone as a teenager to co-founding id Software and helping create Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and Quake, his career has been driven by a simple instinct: find the edge of what technology can do, then push past it. In this keynote, Romero looks back at the pivotal moments, constraints, experiments and decisions that shaped his career—and the lessons they still hold for developers today. He’ll explore why limitations can be powerful creative tools, why great technology begins with understanding the experience you want to create, and why the willingness to experiment, discard work and try something nobody has tried before remains essential to innovation. This is not just a story about the birth of the first-person shooter. It is a talk about the developer mindset: curiosity, iteration, technical ambition, creative risk and the enduring thrill of making something new.
