Web projects of all shapes and sizes have become more and more complex … and with complexity comes performance problems. But to properly optimize beyond framework-dependent high-level tweaks, we first need to understand how to measure performance, how browsers work under the hood, and how we should prioritize applying different tweaks to our frontends—and that's what this workshop is for!Attendees learn about the framework-independent ground truths of frontend performance, how to accelerate projects of all shapes and sizes, and how new web standards can be applied to performance optimization. We dive into the core mechanics of script processing in browsers (covering loading, parsing, and execution stages), investigate several ways to contain rerendering and reflows, and introduce some obvious but underutilized ways to boost performance—from new image formats to the latest JavaScript features. We also interrogate if and how supposedly universal optimizations like minification or web workers really benefit the average web application. This workshop does not cover the 101 of performance optimization, but concentrates on the nerdy details of how browsers actually process web pages. Armed with the knowledge from this workshop, attendees have a much more profound insight into how web browsers actually work and can confidently debug performance issues independent of the stack in question.
