Job description

The successful candidate will work as for the project Mapping the Archaeological Pre-Columbian Heritage of South America (MAPHSA) led by Prof. Marco Madella at the CaSEs (Culture and Socio-Ecological Dynamics) research group, and she/he will be a member of the newly established UPF Centre for Digital Humanities at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

The project will draw from archival work, remote sensing, and on-ground survey to produce the first leading integrated database for the pre-Columbian archaeological heritage of South America that will be Open Access, available on a geospatial relational database, and serve as the primary resource for heritage protection and research repository for the continent.

The tasks and responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  • Development of the project's database architecture and structure
  • Constant maintenance and customization of the database, adapting it to the particularities of the South American archaeological data
  • Integration of the database into Arches (https://www.archesproject.org/)
  • Performing database maintenance, migration, and upgrades

Cooperation with database managers of other Arcadia-funded projects to establish common protocols, as well as with the Arches developers, * The selection process will consider the previous extensive experience of the applicant with archaeological or any other types of databases.

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with the selection committee (either in person or via video call) that will be carried out both in English and Spanish languages.

Requirements

  • PhD in Archaeology or Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science or related areas
  • Experience with database development and maintenance
  • Familiarity with SQL and/or NoSQL query languages
  • Familiarity with Python or another programming language
  • Working knowledge of English
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese will be seen positively

This position offers the opportunity to work in a highly international research group in one of the best universities in Spain. The project will allow for further training of the personnel in GIS software, spatial analysis and spatial statistic as well as working in a multi-national, highly stimulating research environment. The contract has a settlement payment at the end of the employment. This is a full-time position on a permanent contract with an estimated duration of 3 years.

The gross annual salary 29.533,16 euros.
