Job description

Our client, a prominent player in the defence and security sector, is currently seeking an IT Infrastructure Engineer to join their team on a permanent basis. This role is based in Bristol and involves working on client sites across the Southwest. The successful candidate will need to obtain or hold SC clearance., * Full lifecycle IT infrastructure delivery, including design, deployment, configuration, documentation, and support

  • Hands-on work with Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS/DHCP, virtualisation platforms (VMware, Hyper-V), firewalls (e.g., Cisco ASA, Fortinet, Palo Alto), and networking (site-to-site VPNs, LAN/WAN configuration)
  • Perform regular health checks and system hardening aligned with cyber security standards
  • Liaise with clients across the Southwest, requiring local travel
  • Contribute to strategic planning with the Business Unit Director and Delivery Teams
  • Support the setup and improvement of project delivery standards, documentation, and best practices
  • Act as a mentor or lead for junior engineers where needed

Requirements

  • Strong experience with core Microsoft infrastructure including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Windows Server
  • Proficiency in virtualisation platforms such as VMware or Hyper-V
  • Experience in site-to-site networking, including VPNs, subnets, and VLANs
  • Expertise in firewalls and secure boundary design
  • Knowledge of patch management and vulnerability remediation
  • Aware of Cyber Essentials and MoD/Defence security compliance standards
  • Comfortable working in air-gapped and secure environments, * Core Microsoft infrastructure (AD, DNS, DHCP, Windows Server)
  • Virtualisation (VMware or Hyper-V)
  • Site-to-site networking, including VPNs, subnets, VLANs
  • Firewalls and secure boundary design
  • Patch management and vulnerability remediation
  • Awareness of Cyber Essentials / MoD/Defence security compliance standards
  • Comfortable working in air-gapped / secure environments

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent communicator (both internally and client-facing)
  • Team player, willing to assist across roles and functions
  • Ability to work independently and proactively
  • Adaptable to different industries (defence, engineering, manufacturing, etc.)
  • Comfortable under pressure and meeting tight deadlines, * SC Cleared or eligible to obtain clearance
  • Microsoft certifications (e.g., MCSA, MS-102, AZ-104)
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
  • CompTIA Security+ or equivalent
  • PRINCE2 or ITIL Foundations (understanding of delivery frameworks)

  • Willing to handle any part of IT delivery
  • Confident on-site presence; thrives in collaborative settings
  • Open to being fully onsite - both in Bristol HQ and at client locations
  • Open to contractors awaiting permanent hires with long notice periods

Security & Compliance:

  • All roles subject to UK MoD security vetting (minimum SC)
  • Must be a UK resident with at least 5 years of traceable residency
  • Identity and Right to Work checks required pre-employment
