Job description

We are recruiting a Development Manager / Software Engineering Manager to lead and shape our internal development function. This role focuses on people leadership, delivery management and continuous improvement across our digital platforms, products and systems.

You will work closely with Lead Developers and the Head of IT to ensure our development team has clear priorities, strong delivery practices, and the support needed to deliver high-quality, secure and scalable outcomes.

The Role

  • Line-manage a multidisciplinary development team (backend, frontend, mobile)
  • Conduct regular 1-2-1s, objective setting, coaching and performance reviews
  • Plan and manage sprints/iterations, team capacity and delivery cadence
  • Work with stakeholders to prioritise work and maintain healthy backlogs
  • Identify, manage and remove delivery blockers and risks
  • Coordinate release processes to ensure controlled, reliable deployments
  • Promote consistent development standards and secure engineering practices

This is a leadership-focused role with occasional hands-on technical involvement for context, review and guidance, rather than day-to-day coding.

Requirements

Do you have experience in PHP?, You'll bring proven experience leading software development teams and driving delivery outcomes, ideally within web/app development environments.

Essential Experience

  • Experience leading or managing developers in an agile delivery environment
  • Strong understanding of modern development practices, CI/CD and code review workflows
  • Ability to translate technical detail into business impact and priorities
  • Confident stakeholder communication and expectation management
  • Strong organisational and team-coaching skills

Desirable

  • Familiarity with PHP / Laravel and modern JavaScript frameworks
  • Experience with cloud-hosted production systems
  • Exposure to release management, incident management or security considerations
  • Experience with third-party suppliers/contractors is a bonus, * Do you have experience managing developers or technical teams?
  • Do you have experience delivering software or product development projects end-to-end?
