Job description

Our mission is to deliver exceptional public service communication that makes a difference.

People work in government communications because what we do matters. We explain the objectives and policies of the government of the day. We provide clarity and reassurance to the public at times of crisis. We support businesses to grow. We protect our environment. We help those in need to access support.

It's an exciting time to join Government Communications. The launch of the Government Communications Innovating with Impact Strategy in 2024 set our vision to harness the rapid technological changes in AI and communications for the public good, whilst developing our talent with unparalleled opportunities for learning and development. All whilst carrying out interesting, meaningful and purposeful work.

Key to our work is collaborating across boundaries and taking a genuinely diverse and inclusive approach; communicating with and being representative of our audiences in all four corners of the UK.

The Applied Data & Insight team (ADI) within the Cabinet Office sits at the centre of the Government Communications profession and is formed from a group of multidisciplinary experts with backgrounds in Digital, Data Science, Software Development, Insight & Evaluation, Behavioural Science and Communications. We work closely together and with other teams across Government Communications to deliver impactful and innovative data-driven solutions and digital products for 6500 Civil Servants across more than 300 public sector organisations.

It is an exciting time to join ADI as we further develop our award winning AI tool, Assist, against an exciting roadmap that harnesses growing concepts such as agentic workflows and synthetic audience capabilities. We need enthusiastic and driven colleagues to join us as we continue to build innovative AI products that deliver real impact for the public., We are looking for a skilled and energetic AI Engineer to help deliver and scale our portfolio of Generative AI technologies that enable government communicators to better understand and reach their audiences. You will work with Product Managers, Software Developers, User Researchers, Behavioural Scientists and Insight experts to maintain and champion our holistic approach to AI that embodies the highest data ethics and privacy standards in the implementation of AI solutions for Government Communications.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing improvements to the existing Assist and Smart Targets products, following an existing roadmap focusing on improved data ingestion, UI updates (supported by Fullstack Developer) and agentic opportunities.
  • Helping to practically maintain and iterate a web API using FastAPI and hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
