Job description

The UX/UI Web Designer will play a key role in designing The Ehlers-Danlos Society's next-generation website. Working as part of the Website, IT & App Team, and collaborating closely with colleagues across the organization, the postholder will lead on the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design of a new website built in WordPress. The role will focus primarily on the new website build - turning user needs, brand guidelines, and organizational goals into clear, accessible and intuitive page layouts, components and design patterns. This includes supporting content and technical colleagues to ensure that designs are practical to implement, sustainable to maintain, and work well for people using different devices, assistive technologies and connection speeds.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions

This role has five (5) core areas of ownership, the responsibilities involved include, but are not limited to:

Lead UX/UI Design for New Website

  • Take a lead role in designing the user interface for the new organization-wide website, ensuring it is visually engaging, clear and consistent with The Ehlers-Danlos Society's brand.
  • Translate user needs, organisational requirements and agreed information architecture into page layouts, templates, and reusable UI components.
  • Create wireframes, low- and high-fidelity mock-ups, and interactive prototypes to explore and communicate design approaches.
  • Work closely with the Website Developers to ensure designs are feasible, efficient to implement in WordPress, and aligned with agreed technical constraints.
  • Contribute to the development of a simple design system or pattern library (e.g. typography, colour, spacing, buttons, cards, navigation elements, form components) that can be applied consistently across the site.

Champion User Experience, Accessibility & Usability

  • Design with a user-centred mindset, using available feedback and data to shape user journeys and layouts that are intuitive and easy to navigate.
  • Ensure that page layouts, colour usage, typography and interactive states support accessibility best practice and help the organization meet or exceed WCAG 2.2 AA standards and accessibility best practices.
  • Participate in and help to plan usability testing, accessibility reviews and feedback sessions, and iterate designs based on findings.
  • Work with colleagues to ensure content is presented in clear, readable formats, supporting plain language and good content design.

Design for Mobile-First, Performance & Longevity

  • Apply mobile-first and responsive design principles, ensuring layouts work elegantly from small screens up to large desktops.
  • Design components and layouts that are flexible and reusable, reducing duplication and making it easier to maintain and evolve the site over time.
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure that design choices take account of performance (for example, image sizes, use of media, animation and interaction patterns).
  • Help define sensible design guardrails (e.g. maximum heading lengths, image ratios, content character counts) to keep the site fast, consistent and accessible as it grows.

Collaboration on Content Structures, Templates & Migration

  • Work closely with content owners and the Web Coordinator to design page types and templates that support key content needs (e.g. educational content, research information, events, campaigns, news, FAQs, programme pages).
  • Provide design input on the structure and presentation of key user journeys, such as finding information, signing up for events, donating, or accessing specialist resources.
  • Support the configuration and testing of templates in WordPress by providing clear design specs, assets, states and examples.
  • Contribute to content migration planning by helping to identify where existing content fits into new templates and where new patterns may be required.

Cross-Platform Alignment & Team Working

  • Collaborate with the Website, IT & App team members to ensure the new site is cohesive, usable, and technically feasible.
  • Work closely with Communications and brand colleagues to ensure that digital design builds on and strengthens The Ehlers-Danlos Society's visual identity.
  • Contribute to project planning, estimation and progress updates, providing realistic assessments of design effort and timelines.
  • Help document design decisions, patterns and guidelines so they can be understood and used by colleagues beyond the core project team.
