Job description

About MechSpace

MechSpace is UCL Mechanical Engineering's dedicated facility for innovation and hands-on learning. Equipped with advanced CAD/CAM capabilities, it supports projects through the full design cycle-investigate, design, analyse, build, test, and implement. Students work on everything from the IMechE Design Challenge to flagship competitions like Shell Eco-marathon and Formula Student, as well as boats, drones, and even a Mars Rover.

Our workshop features CNC lathes and routers, milling machines, laser cutters, 3D printers, and traditional tools, alongside 3D scanning and inspection rooms. The CAD suite offers high-performance computers with industry-standard software (Catia, Autodesk, Ansys, Altair) and a Virtual Reality suite for immersive design reviews. MechSpace gives students the best chance to turn ideas into reality, learn from experience, and showcase their work-often alongside industry experts.

About the Role

We're seeking a skilled technical specialist to support students, staff, and industry partners in our manufacturing workshops. This is a hands-on, enabling role where you'll translate technical expertise into practical outcomes that enhance student projects and skills.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advising students on design improvements for manufacturability and reliability.
  • Ensuring all activities follow best practice and safety standards.
  • Maintaining and developing Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Collaborating with students on sketches, CAD layouts, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings.

You'll work as part of the MechSpace team to maintain a consistent technical presence during operating hours, with flexibility for occasional weekend work.

About You

You are an experienced engineer with a strong technical foundation, ideally holding an HND/HNC, Level 4 NVQ, or a recognised apprenticeship, supported by substantial post-qualification experience-or equivalent expertise gained in a technical role. Your background includes hands-on work in high-tech industries such as motorsport, aerospace, or automotive, and you have a proven ability in precision manufacturing, working with diverse tools and materials and inspecting components to micron-level accuracy.

Organised and self-motivated, you thrive under pressure and manage your workload effectively. You communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-specialists and enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team. Your knowledge spans design and manufacturing principles, engineering materials, and Health & Safety regulations, and you're willing to undertake role-specific training. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm in a busy environment are essential.

It would be advantageous if you have experience with 3D CAD software such as Catia, CNC programming using CAM tools like Mastercam, and conversational controls such as Siemens 828D or ProtoTRAK. Familiarity with Higher Education environments, manual machining, fitting and assembly, and interpreting engineering drawings will strengthen your application. Above all, you bring innovative problem-solving skills and a passion for developing bespoke solutions.

Rewards and Benefits

Alongside this exciting opportunity, UCL offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous annual leave, pension schemes, and access to professional development. Learn more on our Rewards and Benefits page.

Our Commitment to Equality

We value diversity and inclusion and encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities, disabled people, LGBTQI+ individuals, and women in senior roles. Our department proudly holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award for advancing gender equality.
