Job description

The ERP Business Analyst is responsible for leading the business, process, and functional evaluation of shortlisted SaaS ERP solutions. The role ensures that each candidate system can support the target finance operating model with minimal customisation, robust internal controls, and sustainable day-to-day operation by a lean finance function.

The role acts as the primary authority on business and finance process fit, translating requirements into structured evaluation criteria, scripted demonstrations, and evidence-based scoring. The analyst ensures that supplier claims are tested against realistic operational scenarios and statutory obligations, rather than relying on marketing assertions.

RequirementsKey Responsibilities:

  1. Functional and Process Fit Assessment
  • Lead assessment of candidate ERP platforms across end-to-end finance processes, including:
  1. General Ledger and period close
  2. Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
  3. Fixed Assets and depreciation
  4. Budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
  • Analyse how well standard system functionality supports required processes
  • Assess the extent to which requirements can be met through configuration rather than bespoke customisation
  • Identify functional gaps, workarounds, dependencies, and operational impacts, and document them clearly
  1. Controls, Auditability, and Compliance Assessment
  • Evaluate the strength of financial controls, including:
  1. Approval workflows and segregation of duties
  2. Audit trails and transaction traceability
  3. Period-close controls, journals, and adjustments
  • Assess alignment with statutory reporting and audit expectations
  • Confirm that controls are enforced through system design and configuration, not manual workarounds
  1. User-Journey Definition and Demonstrations
  • Define scripted, end-to-end user journeys for vendor demonstrations, covering:
  1. Period close
  2. Procure-to-pay
  3. Order-to-cash / receivables
  4. Fixed-asset lifecycle
  5. Budgeting and reporting
  • Ensure demonstrations focus on:
  1. Realistic, business-relevant scenarios
  2. Control points, approvals, and exception handling
  3. Accuracy, clarity, and usability of reporting outputs
  • Act as the lead business evaluator during demonstrations, probing depth of capability rather than surface functionality
  1. Platform Suitability from a Business Perspective
  • Assess how each ERP platform supports:
  1. Operation by a lean finance team
  2. Automation and reduction of manual effort
  3. Consistent processes and controls across users
  • Evaluate configuration vs customisation trade-offs from a business sustainability perspective
  • Identify functional or usability constraints that could limit future operating change
  1. Contribution to Implementation Feasibility
  • Provide business and process input into:
  1. Implementation approach and phasing
  2. Testing strategy (system testing, UAT, cutover readiness)
  3. User enablement and adoption risks
  • Assess whether proposed solutions are realistically implementable within required timescales
  • Identify process, data, or control risks that could threaten go-live or benefits realisation
  1. Scoring, Evidence, and Governance:
  • Score candidate solutions objectively against agreed functional and business criteria
  • Ensure all scores are supported by demonstrable evidence from documentation, demonstrations, and proofs
  • Document assumptions, exclusions, dependencies, and risks clearly
  • Contribute clear, defensible business rationale to the System Selection Report

Key Deliverables:

  • Functional and process-fit assessment inputs and scored evaluation matrices
  • Scripted user-journey demonstration scenarios
  • Written assessment of controls, auditability, and reporting capability
  • Configuration vs customisation analysis (business-led)
  • Contributions to the final System Selection Report, * ERP solutions are assessed consistently and objectively from a business and process perspective
  • Demonstrations surface real operational capability rather than sales narratives
  • Functional, control, and usability risks are identified early and transparently
  • The final recommendation is credible, well-evidenced, and defensible under governance and audit review

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of ERP configuration, controls, and audit trails from a business perspective
  • Ability to translate business requirements into structured evaluation criteria and artefacts

Desirable

  • Experience in regulated or audit-intensive environments
  • Experience supporting formal procurement or system-selection exercises
  • Familiarity with MEAT-aligned evaluation and scoring frameworks

Key Competencies and Behaviours

  • Analytical and evidence-led
  • Business-focused and platform-agnostic
  • Strong control awareness and attention to detail
  • Clear communicator with both finance users and senior stakeholders
  • Governance-aware and audit-ready

Benefits & conditions

  • Opportunities for career growth and development.
