Job description

KDS-D10 - Data Officer Job description Data is the lifeblood of all organisations. Understanding and being able to trust all of the data in a complex organisation is critical. If you are an enthusiastic, motivated and curious person with an IT/information science background and interest and knowledge of relational databases and .Net programming (C#/ASP.Net) or related approaches we think you could be the right addition to our Data and Development Team at the University of Winchester. The University uses a number of systems which deal with student records, finance, placements, recruitment, learner analytics, estate management and timetabling to name a few. These are delivered using a range of technologies including on-premise Microsoft SQL Server and Cloud/SAAS based systems which are central to the operation of the University. Leveraging this data to inform strategic decision making is critical to efficient operation of the University and a core component of the University Corporate plan and supporting strategies. The successful transfer of data between these systems is critical to keeping the University operations running. You will be responsible for providing support to the Head of Data and Development and will lead on assessing the quality of data used across the systems, investigating data quality issues, supporting the development of a good data culture across the University and working with other stakeholders across the University to document the use of data both within systems and in business processes. You must have an analytical approach to problem solving with a good attention to detail and be capable of reading and interpreting code written in SQL and .Net, translating that information to data mapping diagrams/a data dictionary and data flows. Specific aspects of the role include:

  • Mapping data use and the flows of information through processes and between systems (ideally with experience of Visio or other process flow mapping software)
  • Contribute to the creation, population and on-going maintenance of the data dictionary
  • Supporting the implementation of new solutions, ensuring that the use of data is managed correctly and securely
  • Supporting large transformational projects for data mapping and transfer activities
  • Working with the functional business owners to get a strong understanding of business processes
  • Investigating data quality issues and liaising with the other members of the team and the wider data owners to implement solutions.
  • Support the Head of Data and Development in all areas of data activities
  • Promote the data governance culture across the University

Requirements

You will have the ability to work to deadlines both independently and as part of a team and will ideally have some experience of querying data using SQL and have the ability to use AI tools to understand and explore the data. An ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external parties is essential as is a keen awareness of the need for documentation and change management. As an employee at the University of Winchester, we are committed to your wellbeing and development. You will have access to a wide range of benefits and support including
