Roke provides technology innovation and consultancy to a variety of Defence clients and are seeking a Hardware and Infrastructure Engineer to drive forwards some of our key Information Advantage offers, working with a dynamic team and customers to transform, change and improve digital technologies which underpin and drive critical business for our customers and ultimately save lives.
As well as Technical & Leadership credentials, you'll need a solid understanding of infrastructure design, development and release to service on major defence or public sector delivery programmes such that engineering delivery proceeds in harmony with wider business activity.
As an infrastructure and hardware engineer at Roke you will get to work on exciting and innovative projects, you will be expected to support other infrastructure developers, architects, testers and business analysts. You will also be expected to support rapid prototyping and product development in a fast-moving, agile delivery framework.
Your role
- Leading the design and development of Hardware / Infrastructure that capability is delivered through including supporting military exercises, demonstrations and testing.
- Support the hardware design, development and delivery for Roke IA products.
- Support the wider team on design decisions and trade-offs in terms of safety, security, reliability and maintainability from a hardware and infrastructure perspective.
What you'll bring
- Previous demonstrable experience of delivering and supporting hardware and infrastructure in the military and/or commercial domain.
- Knowledge of networks, hardware, firewalls, hypervisor and windows /linux configuration and management.
- Knowledge and understanding of supporting and maintaining equipment in the live environment whether on military exercise or technical demonstrations / installation.
- Understanding of planning and executing hardware lifecycle management, upgrades and capacity expansion.
- Work with vendors for hardware procurement, warranties and support cases.
- Maintenance of hardware inventory, asset tracking and system documentation.
- Comfortable talking about and discussing hardware and infrastructure technology
- Understanding of Continuous Integration, Dependency Management and Source Control tools

- Perform lifecycle management of hypervisor platforms; Troubleshoot virtualization performance, storage, and hardware integration issues.
- Implement disaster recovery strategies for virtual environments.
- Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and domain services
- Implement security policies, patch management, and role-based access controls
- Success will require an effective and engaging communicator able to explain required approaches and action points to a range of stakeholders from contracted industry delivery teams up to 1 * level civil servants. You'll need to be able to act as a trusted advisor to our clients and their business stakeholders.
Areas of Responsibility / Tasks
- Manage each delivery project's scope and timeline.
- Facilitate internal communication and effective collaboration.
- Design, deploy, and maintain virtualized environments using platforms such as VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V)
- Design and implement LAN, WAN, and VLAN architectures
- Install, configure, and maintain Windows Server environments (2016/2019/2022)
- Configure and manage firewall platforms (hardware and software-based)
- Design, build, and maintain physical server, storage, and networking hardware
- Be the point of contact for external communication on hardware and infrastructure development / deployment, e.g., customers and stakeholders.
- Work with product owners / technical teams to handle requirements and hardware product development
