Job description
We're looking for a GIS Specialist to join our ICT and GIS team based at our Head Office in Kendal. The role is the Authority's lead officer on GIS systems development, data, and support.
As the Planning Authority and a land-based organisation, GIS information is critical to the decisions we take and work we do. As our lead GIS officer, you will develop, deliver and maintain our GIS systems and applications, and provide insight using spatial data. We have an excellent track record of developing in-house solutions and systems unique to the work we do.

Our ICT and GIS team is a small but highly responsive team and central to work across the whole authority. We have a track record of success in providing colleagues with bespoke tools and applications enabling them to do their jobs in an efficient and flexible way.
We operate a hybrid way of working combining working from home and days at our office base at Wayfaring House, Kendal or potentially at one of our offices across the national park. You'll be provided with a laptop to enable you to access our secure IT network when working remotely.
The role Your main duties and responsibilities will be:
- To act as the professional and technical lead on Geographical Information Systems (GIS), developing and delivering appropriate and cost-effective systems in accordance with the GIS Strategy.
- To oversee the work of the GIS Users to ensure that agreed methods, techniques and standards are used in order to ensure a high-quality service is delivered to internal and external customers.
- Facilitate publication and management of public facing geospatial data sets.
- Working with the Database Analyst and GIS Data Officer to manage and maintain spatial data in various formats, including relational spatial databases.
- Act as the Authority's principal contact with the Ordnance Survey ensuring compliance with the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement.
- Working with the ICT Development Team to enhance the Authority's use of spatial data within applications, focusing on streamlining processes through automation, and ensuring the integration of GIS with existing systems, web mapping and mobile working.
Requirements
This opportunity would suit someone who's highly motivated, innovative and customer focussed, with a passion for problem solving and helping colleagues get the right tools and information when and where they need it.
You will need a broad range of skills across the GIS spectrum, including the use of desktop applications, web-publishing tools, database management of spatial datasets, automation using scripts and ETL software, and spatial data analysis.
