Under general supervision process all test requests and demographic data received by the Public Health Laboratory (PHL). Respond to telephone and mail inquiries concerning laboratory results. This position is responsible for performing daily temperature checks on all specimen shippers received for testing in the Diagnostic Serology and Analytical Chemistry Departments, Tuesday through Saturday. The incumbent ensures that all specimen shipping temperatures meet PHL Standardized Temperature Definitions and documents findings in accordance with established procedures. The position performs specimen accessioning, including categorization, numbering, centrifugation, and racking, while strictly adhering to bloodborne pathogen safety protocols. The incumbent evaluates specimens for acceptability and rejects those that do not meet established criteria.

Responsibilities include accurate entry and verification of patient demographics in the Open Enterprise Laboratory Information System (ELIS) (Laboratory Information Management System, LIMS) database, as well as the Specimen Gate/Screening Center (LIMS) database for newborn screening. The incumbent follows established laboratory procedures to correct incomplete or invalid data to ensure data integrity. The position responds to telephone and mail inquiries regarding laboratory testing and maintains logs of requests for test results. Additional duties include performing routine quality control checks on laboratory equipment, including centrifuges and eyewash stations, and promptly notifying the supervisor of any issues. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment, including the proper handling and disposal of infectious and hazardous waste in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and the Laboratory Exposure Control Plan.

This position requires availability to work mandatory Saturdays and state-observed holidays to support specimen receipt and provide data entry assistance to the Newborn Screening Program. The incumbent must also report to work during periods of inclement weather and emergency events to ensure continuity of critical laboratory operations. Additional duties may be assigned as required.

Requirements

State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and work experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting, in a health care setting or in a general maintenance or machine shop environment. A bachelor's degree in a related scientific discipline may be substituted for the required work experience.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
