Job description

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Design Engineer to join a specialist engineering business within the smoke ventilation and life-safety sector. As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, estimating and technical support of smoke ventilation systems across the full project lifecycle. You’ll work closely with Sales, Operations, Project Managers, Engineers, contractors and clients to develop compliant and commercially competitive solutions. Key Responsibilities

  • Design smoke ventilation systems using AutoCAD and relevant engineering tools.
  • Produce layouts, schematics and technical documentation.
  • Interpret fire strategies, specifications and consultant drawings.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant standards and guidance.
  • Prepare cost estimates, take-offs and quotations.
  • Produce technical proposals and tender submissions.
  • Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers for pricing and technical information.
  • Identify value engineering opportunities.
  • Provide technical support throughout project delivery.
  • Support Project Managers with design development and handover.
  • Attend technical meetings with clients and contractors.
  • Develop standard details and best-practice guidance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and lessons learned.

Requirements

️ IMPORTANT: Candidates MUST have previous hands-on experience designing smoke ventilation systems., We’re looking for a Design Engineer who has:

  • Previous hands-on experience designing smoke ventilation systems - ESSENTIAL.
  • Experience designing natural, mechanical and/or pressurisation smoke control systems.
  • Strong understanding of Approved Document B.
  • Knowledge of BS 9999, BS 9991, EN 12101 and BS 7346-7.
  • Experience interpreting fire strategies, drawings and specifications.
  • Strong AutoCAD skills.
  • Revit experience would be advantageous.
  • Experience with estimating, take-offs and tender submissions.
  • Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.

The Ideal Candidate

This role would suit a technically strong Design Engineer with an established background in smoke ventilation design. You’ll need to be comfortable taking ownership of designs from initial enquiry through to project completion, whilst balancing technical compliance, commercial requirements and client expectations. Smoke ventilation design experience is essential - candidates without this background will not be considered.
