Job description

The Staff Software Engineer - AI at Personio is a pivotal role within the Internal AI team, responsible for leading the development of AI-driven internal products and infrastructure. This position requires a highly experienced engineer to tackle the most complex and ambiguous technical challenges, setting standards and guiding the team through innovative solutions. The role involves working across the full spectrum of AI engineering, from designing scalable architectures to maintaining production-grade systems. The engineer will collaborate closely with the AI Platform team to shape shared infrastructure, contribute to the company’s AI strategy, and influence how AI is integrated into Personio’s operations. This role offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of AI transformation within a rapidly evolving company, impacting both internal processes and the broader industry landscape., * Own the most complex internal products and tools end-to-end, defining their architecture, development, and deployment.

  • Make critical architecture decisions, managing risks and setting clear technical directions for ambiguous projects.
  • Establish standards for production-grade internal tooling, automations, and AI systems across the full technology stack.
  • Define completion criteria for internal products, ensuring high quality, reliability, and maintainability through robust monitoring, error handling, and documentation.
  • Own critical systems throughout their lifecycle, ensuring continuous operation and evolution in line with company needs.
  • Collaborate with the AI Platform team to shape shared infrastructure, contribute to platform improvements, and surface requirements from complex use cases.
  • Set technical direction for the internal AI engineering team, reviewing architecture, standards, and code quality.
  • Mentor and develop other engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and design feedback, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
  • Represent the internal AI team in cross-functional discussions, providing clarity on AI capabilities and engineering constraints affecting product roadmaps.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in building and deploying production software systems.
  • Proven technical leadership with the ability to set engineering standards and influence architecture decisions.
  • Expertise in Python, particularly in distributed systems, APIs, and data integration.
  • Hands-on experience developing AI products, including agent workflows, RAG pipelines with LLM APIs, and agent frameworks such as LangGraph.
  • Strong judgment on where AI adds value and where it may be overkill for specific use cases.
  • Experience deploying and operating cloud-based services, especially using AWS, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of security practices related to authentication, authorization, and data privacy (SSO, OAuth, RBAC, GDPR).
