Job description

This is a hands-on front-end development role, ideal for someone who enjoys turning designs and requirements into clean, responsive, user-friendly websites. You’ll work primarily with HTML, CSS and basic JavaScript, developing themes that are consistent, accessible and work well across different screen sizes and devices.

What you’ll be doing

  • Creating and maintaining website themes for our in-house CMS.
  • Translating designs and specifications into clean, well-structured HTML and CSS.
  • Building responsive layouts using CSS Flexbox and CSS Grid.
  • Adding basic JavaScript functionality where required.
  • Ensuring websites work consistently across modern browsers and devices.
  • Paying close attention to spacing, typography, alignment, colours and other visual details.
  • Testing your work thoroughly and fixing layout, styling and functionality issues.
  • Working with colleagues to understand requirements and deliver themes that meet both technical and design expectations.
  • Maintaining and improving existing themes and front-end components.

Requirements

  • Good experience with HTML5 and CSS3.
  • Strong understanding of CSS Flexbox and CSS Grid.
  • Good understanding of responsive web design.
  • Basic knowledge of JavaScript.
  • An understanding of cross-browser compatibility.
  • The ability to work from designs and accurately reproduce layouts and styling.
  • Good understanding of web accessibility and semantic HTML.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly when matching designs and maintaining consistency.
  • A methodical approach to testing and troubleshooting.
  • The ability to work independently while also communicating effectively with the wider team.

Desirable skills

Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:

  • Working with Content Management Systems.
  • Creating reusable CSS components or design systems.
  • Browser developer tools and debugging.
  • Git or other version-control systems.
  • Web accessibility standards.
  • Basic understanding of SEO and web performance.

The type of person we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who takes pride in producing clean, accurate and polished work. Small details matter in this role, so you should naturally notice when something is slightly misaligned, inconsistent or doesn’t quite look right.

You should be comfortable taking a design or brief and working out how best to implement it, while asking questions when requirements aren’t clear. You’ll also need to be organised, reliable and able to manage your own workload.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who enjoys building websites and has a genuine interest in producing a great user experience.

Why join us?

You’ll have the opportunity to work on a variety of websites and themes while developing your skills across front-end development, responsive design and CMS-based web development. You’ll also play an important role in shaping and improving the themes used across our platform.
