Job description

We're looking for a Specialist Engineer to join our Business Infrastructure & Technology (BIT) Team in a field-based role, delivering high-quality fibre and managed service solutions to business customers ranging from small enterprises to large, complex organisations.

This role plays a key part in achieving productivity and quality targets while delivering an excellent customer experience. You'll work closely with colleagues across the business, using your technical expertise to support service delivery, improve ways of working, and help shape future systems and network development., In this role, you'll be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of KCOM's copper and fibre network, with a strong focus on business customers. Key responsibilities include:

  • Installing FTTP services into business premises, from small sites to large enterprise environments.
  • Delivering and supporting Managed Services, including voice solutions, Wi-Fi, and Cisco-based products.
  • Carrying out repair and provision activities across the KCOM estate, maintaining quality and consistency.
  • Installing single and multiple telecommunications services such as VoIP, broadband, and business FTTP, including CAT5 cabling and fibre where required.
  • Achieving productivity targets and KPIs while ensuring Right First Time (RFT) delivery.
  • Diagnosing and resolving complex network and customer issues efficiently and safely.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement by identifying better ways of working and supporting change initiatives.
  • Working collaboratively with Field Operations and wider business teams to deliver a first-class customer experience.
  • Ensuring full compliance with Health & Safety, IBMS, ISO standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Completing all required training, eLearning, and administrative tasks to meet business and compliance needs.

Requirements

  • Experience working in large, complex network environments, across both copper and fibre technologies.
  • Strong practical skills using hand tools and copper and fibre testing equipment.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve network and customer incidents efficiently.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with customers, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing as part of a collaborative team.
  • EUSR accreditation.
  • NRSWA 01 and LA (Signs, Lighting and Guarding) certification.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Ability to pass a full DBS check.
  • IT-literate, with effective use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred / Desirable

  • Telecoms industry experience across copper and fibre networks, including installation, faulting, jointing, and cabinet work.
  • Ability to read and interpret service prints and network schematics.
  • Experience using ServiceNow FSM.
  • Overhead delivery experience (IPAF preferred).
  • Cisco CCNA (or higher).
  • Experience in process creation, continuous improvement, or lean activities.
