Job description
The Technical Analyst, Population data and estimation in humanitarian settings post is located in the Population and Development Branch of the Technical Division, HQ. S/He provides technical support to meet the data needs of UNFPA in the areas of population dynamics and projections, population estimates for humanitarian preparedness and response, and population estimates relevant to UNFPA programming. The incumbent will work with PDB Technical Advisers, under the direct supervision of the Technical Specialist for Health and Social Inequalities, and the overall direction of the Chief, Population and Development Branch. The Technical Specialist works within an integrated, coordinated, and systems strengthening approach which is fundamental to the Division's and UNFPA's overall strategy.
Requirements
Post-graduate university degree or equivalent in the quantitative social sciences, such as public health epidemiology, statistics, demography, sociology, economics, data science, or related discipline. The graduate or post graduate degree should be directly related to the substantive area identified in the post., * At least 2 years of experience in data collection, analysis, visualization, dissemination, database management and research within an academic or development institution in an international setting
- Strong knowledge of statistical methodologies, including strong competencies in the use of statistical packages such as R, Python, or STATA.
- Experience in constructing subnational population projections in low- and middle-income countries
- Familiarity and/or experience working with refugee and internal displacement data from international humanitarian settings is an asset
- Mastery of demographic methods and statistical techniques for data quality assessment, processing and analysis using a variety of health and population sources (DHS, MICS and population census)
- Ability to provide advice and guidance on the analysis, interpretation and application of data from incomplete and deficient population/demographic data
- Experience and ability in meeting tight deadlines to support humanitarian response and disaster preparedness
- Familiarity and experience with mark-up languages such as MarkDown, RmarkDown and dashboard development tools, such as R Shiny, is an asset.
- Familiarity with version control systems for data analysis projects, such as Git and Github, is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent report writing and compelling oral presentations
- Familiarity with the UN system is desirable Languages: Fluency in English, working knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Arabic is desirable
