Job description

We are recruiting for an IT Technical Officer to provide first-line IT support to staff and elected members, helping to maintain and develop the Council’s IT infrastructure. This role involves supporting desktop systems, Microsoft 365 environments, networking, user administration and a wide range of IT services, while ensuring excellent customer service across multiple Council locations.

Your Duties:

  • Provide first-line IT support to staff and elected members, resolving technical issues and responding to helpdesk requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Install, configure, deploy and maintain desktop hardware, software and end-user applications across Council sites.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, networking and system issues, escalating more complex problems where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents, requests and resolutions using the IT helpdesk management system.
  • Deliver high standards of customer service by taking ownership of support requests and seeing them through to completion.
  • Assist with the administration and maintenance of Microsoft 365, Azure, Active Directory/Entra ID, Windows desktop and server environments, and Council communication systems.
  • Support the security, integrity and resilience of the Council’s IT systems, including backup, restoration and compliance with information security procedures.
  • Provide IT support for Council and Committee meetings, including audio-visual equipment, streaming, broadcasting and remote access technologies.
  • Assist with IT projects, procurement activities, supplier management and the implementation of new technologies and services.
  • Deliver user guidance and training where required and undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post.

Requirements

  • Must have the right to work in the UK.
  • Hold a third-level qualification in an IT-related discipline. Applicants without a third-level qualification must have a minimum of five GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grades A-C, including English and a numeracy-based subject, together with at least two years’ relevant IT support experience.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience in an IT technical support role, including helpdesk support, hardware support and customer service.
  • Experience supporting Windows 10/11 desktop and Microsoft server operating systems within a Microsoft domain environment.
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 applications and administration centres.
  • Knowledge of general networking, server maintenance and technical support.
  • Hold a full current driving licence with access to a vehicle for business use, or have access to suitable transport that enables the duties of the role to be carried out.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving and organisational skills with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
