Job description

We are seeking a Data Center Hardware Engineer to support critical infrastructure operations within a large-scale data center environment. This role is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, installing, and optimizing data center hardware and Layer 1 infrastructure while supporting operational excellence, change management, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of data center infrastructure, hardware platforms, cabling systems, and operational processes. This individual must be able to work independently, think critically, and understand how infrastructure changes impact the broader environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesData Center Operations & Incident Response

  • Identify and respond to onsite risks, incidents, and high-priority operational issues.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, infrastructure, and connectivity issues while minimizing service disruptions.
  • Support shift turnover activities, incident queues, media processing, and vendor escorts.
  • Maintain operational readiness and ensure adherence to established procedures and standards.

Infrastructure Deployment & Lifecycle Management

  • Support critical system installations, hardware refreshes, reconfigurations, equipment relocations, and decommissioning activities.
  • Execute data room moves and support planned power-down events.
  • Install, upgrade, test, and validate hardware and infrastructure components.
  • Assist with capacity planning, inventory management, and asset tracking activities.

Engineering & Infrastructure Support

  • Contribute to Layer 1 infrastructure design, implementation, and documentation efforts.
  • Evaluate infrastructure dependencies and assess the impact of changes across servers, storage, networking, power, and facility systems.
  • Review change requests and identify potential risks before implementation.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives and operational optimization efforts.

Documentation & Process Improvement

  • Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, standards, and operational records.
  • Evaluate existing processes and recommend improvements to increase efficiency and reliability.
  • Support knowledge sharing, training, and onboarding efforts for team members.

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with engineering teams, service owners, project stakeholders, vendors, and operational teams.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, technical reviews, demonstrations, and planning sessions.
  • Provide technical input and support for infrastructure projects and operational initiatives.

Requirements

  • 1-3+ years of experience supporting, deploying, or maintaining data center infrastructure environments.
  • Experience with hardware installation, break/fix support, component replacement, and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Understanding of data center hardware, servers, storage systems, networking equipment, and physical infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of indoor and outdoor cabling systems, including copper and fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with structured cabling standards and data center best practices.
  • Experience with ticketing and IT service management platforms such as ServiceNow, Jira, or similar tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Telecommunications, Network Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years of experience in data center operations, deployment, or infrastructure support.
  • CompTIA A+, Network+, or other relevant industry certifications.
  • Experience with Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms such as:
  • Sunbird
  • DC Track
  • Power IQ
  • Nlyte
  • Familiarity with change management processes, SOPs, and operational governance.
  • Experience supporting new facility builds, major renovations, or infrastructure expansion projects.
