Job description
As Shift Manager (Days), you will lead, manage and develop a motivated manufacturing team that consistently delivers safe, compliant, high-quality product at the lowest sustainable cost. You will provide visible, structured leadership during day operations, ensuring the site remains audit-ready for customer and third-party visits. In parallel, you will work with the APU Manager and other Site Shift Managers to shape and execute the rolling 3-12 month plan, translating strategic priorities into delivered improvements on the shop floor., Leadership and people development
- Lead and develop Line Supervisors; create clarity on expectations, routines and accountabilities across all lines.
- Coach Supervisors to build capability, engagement and performance across 30+ indirect reports.
- Own people processes within your area of responsibility: performance management, absence management, recruitment input and succession planning in conjunction with HR/APU leadership.
- Ensure SOP deployment, skills gap analysis, training plans, shop floor training and maintenance of training records (with the Training Coordinator).
- Drive robust, timely communication through established channels (toolbox talks, forums, shift briefs) and build a positive culture and morale.
Health, safety and security
- Hold overall responsibility for site safety and security while on shift; lead by example and intervene immediately on unsafe acts/conditions.
- Lead incident investigation and escalation, including root cause analysis and effective corrective and preventative actions.
- Evaluate and enhance risk assessments; ensure Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to and raise concerns where controls are not effective.
- Support site safety action plans and contribute to monthly H&S briefings with Production/H&S leadership.
Quality, food safety and audit readiness
- Embed a 'do it right' ethos: ensure teams work to standards, specifications and processes, and close knowledge gaps through coaching and corrective actions.
- Own GMP and audit activity in your area, closing actions with support functions and keeping the operation audit-ready at all times.
- Drive review and actioning of customer complaints with Technical and shop floor teams to reduce repeat issues.
- Ensure cleaning requirements are achieved against the defined schedule set by Technical/Hygiene and support successful new product introductions with NPD.
Customer service and performance delivery
- Deliver attainment to plan and ensure daily variance reporting is accurate, timely and action-led.
- Ensure internal KPIs between departments are achieved and internal customer expectations are met.
- Own corrective and preventative actions in response to non-conformances attributable to your area.
Cost optimisation and loss elimination
- Analyse KPI and cost reports, build recovery plans for budget/KPI non-conformance with the APU Manager.
- Understand Material Usage Variance (MUV) and drive root cause and correction for BOM deviations.
- Identify and deliver cost improvement initiatives; investigate equipment damage and implement preventative actions.
Continuous improvement and change
- Enable and promote a culture of continuous improvement and self-improvement within teams.
- Initiate and lead cross-functional teams to drive business improvement; ensure initiatives are captured, prioritised and benefits realised.
- Ensure CI actions and changes are successfully implemented and sustained through standard work and governance.
Strategic planning (3-12 month horizon)
- Work with the APU Manager and other Site Shift Managers to build and deliver the rolling 3-12 month plan (capability, CI roadmap, capacity, constraint management and operational risk).
- Translate strategic priorities into executable line plans with owners, milestones, measures and follow-through.
Requirements
Do you have experience in Quality assurance?, * GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths; literacy/numeracy to national Level 2 standard.
- Intermediate Food Hygiene training and HACCP awareness.
- Coaching skills and auditing experience., * Strong leadership skills with demonstrable ability to manage and develop a high performing team through Line Supervisors.
- Extensive experience working in the FMCG/Food sector (especially manufacturing).
- Proven track record delivering continuous improvement and change initiatives; experience of lean ways of working.
- Strong organisational and interpersonal skills, with excellent written and verbal communication.
- Self-driven and results oriented with meticulous attention to detail; able to multi-task and remain calm under pressure.
- Computer literate with sound understanding of Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Skills
- HNC (or equivalent) in manufacturing/operations.
- IOSH Managing Safely.
- Intermediate HACCP qualification.
- Snack food manufacturing experience.
- BRC and/or AIB knowledge.
